Adult Comic
The catch-all term adult comics typically denotes comic books, comic magazines, comic strips or graphic novels that are marketed either mainly or strictly towards adult (or mature) readers. This can be because they contain material that could be considered thematically inappropriate for children, including vulgarity, morally questionable actions, disturbing imagery, and sexually explicit material. Adult comics can be defined as intended for audience of 16 years or older. Vertigo Comics
Vertigo Comics, also known as DC Vertigo or simply Vertigo, was an imprint of American comic book publisher DC Comics started by editor Karen Berger in 1993. Vertigo's purpose was to publish comics with adult content, such as nudity, drug use, profanity, and graphic violence, that did not fit the restrictions of DC's main line, thus allowing more creative freedom. Its titles consisted of company-owned comics set in the DC Universe, such as '' The Sandman'' and ''Hellblazer'', and creator-owned works, such as ''Preacher'', '' Y: The Last Man'' and ''Fables''. The Vertigo branding was retired in 2020, and most of its library transitioned to DC Black Label. Torchy (comics)
''Torchy'' is a comic strip and, primarily, a series of comic books featuring the ingenue Torchy Todd, created by the American "good girl art" cartoonist Bill Ward during 1944. The character was ranked 97th of the 2011 ''Comics Buyer's Guide's'' "100 Sexiest Women in Comics" list. Publication history After Bill Ward's drafting into the World War II military, the artist created the tall, blond, busty ingenue Torchy Todd for the base newspaper of Brooklyn's Fort Hamilton, where Ward was deployed. The comic strip in which she featured soon became syndicated to other Army newspapers worldwide. Torchy made her comic-book debut as main character of a backup feature of Quality Comics' ''Doll Man'' #8 (Spring 1946). William Hess Ward (March 6, 1919 – November 17, 1998), was an American cartoonist notable as a good girl artist and creator of the risqué comics character Torchy. Biography Early life and career Born in Brooklyn, New York, Ward grew up in Ridgewood, New Jersey, where his father was an executive with the United Fruit Company. Male Call
''Male Call'' is an American comic strip series created and drawn by Milton Caniff on a volunteer basis, exclusively for US military publications during World War II. The strip began January 24, 1943. Caniff continued ''Male Call'' until seven months after V-J Day, bringing it to a conclusion on March 3, 1946. Spin-off strip To contribute to the war effort, Caniff decided to draw a weekly comic strip and make it available at no cost to military camp newspapers. The Camp Newspaper Service was launched to syndicate Caniff's weekly page and contributions from other civilians. For CNS, Caniff created a unique version of his ''Terry and the Pirates (comic strip), Terry and the Pirates'', completely different in content from his regular daily and Sunday strips for the Tribune Media Services, ''Chicago Tribune'' Syndicate.
