Extraction (chemistry)
Extraction in chemistry is a separation process consisting of the separation of a substance from a matrix. Common examples include '' liquid-liquid extraction'', and ''solid phase extraction''. The distribution of a solute between two phases is an equilibrium condition described by partition theory. This is based on exactly how the analyte moves from the initial solvent into the extracting solvent. The term ''washing'' may also be used to refer to an extraction in which impurities are extracted from the solvent containing the desired compound. Types of extraction * Liquid–liquid extraction * Solid-phase extraction * Acid-base extraction * Supercritical fluid extraction * Ultrasound-assisted extraction * Heat reflux extraction * Mechanochemical-assisted extraction * Maceration * Microwave-assisted extraction * Instant controlled pressure drop extraction (DIC, from the French, Détente instantanée contrôlée) * Perstraction Laboratory applications and examples Liqu ...

Information Extraction
Information extraction (IE) is the task of automatically extracting structured information from unstructured and/or semi-structured machine-readable documents and other electronically represented sources. In most of the cases this activity concerns processing human language texts by means of natural language processing (NLP). Recent activities in multimedia document processing like automatic annotation and content extraction out of images/audio/video/documents could be seen as information extraction Due to the difficulty of the problem, current approaches to IE (as of 2010) focus on narrowly restricted domains. An example is the extraction from newswire reports of corporate mergers, such as denoted by the formal relation: :\mathrm(company_1, company_2, date), from an online news sentence such as: :''"Yesterday, New York based Foo Inc. announced their acquisition of Bar Corp."'' A broad goal of IE is to allow computation to be done on the previously unstructured data. A more sp ...

Comedo Extraction
Comedo extraction is a widely used method of treatment for acne vulgaris. A dermatologist or cosmetologist may extract blackheads (open comedones) using gentle pressure around the pore opening, and whiteheads (closed comedones) by incision with a large needle or a blade. If performed skillfully, this treatment may be beneficial to the patient. Possible negative effects of the procedure include incomplete extraction, refilling, scarring and tissue damage. There are few articles describing the use of comedo extraction in peer-reviewed dermatology journals. In one 1964 study of extraction of non-inflamed whiteheads on patients' foreheads (the only study of the procedure cited in a 2007 literature review A literature review is an overview of the previously published works on a topic. The term can refer to a full scholarly paper or a section of a scholarly work such as a book, or an article. Either way, a literature review is supposed to provid ...), the procedure reduced the nu ...

Anatomy Of A Stroke
In rowing, the stroke is the action of moving the oar through the water in order to propel the boat forward. The two fundamental reference points in the stroke are the ''catch'' where the oar blade is placed in the water, and the ''extraction'' (also known as the 'finish', 'release' or 'tapping down') where the oar blade is removed from the water. After the blade is placed in the water at the ''catch'', the rower applies pressure to the oar levering the boat forward which is called the ''drive'' phase of the stroke. Once the rower extracts the oar from the water, the ''recovery'' phase begins, setting up the rower's body for the next stroke.; when the oars are out of the water, and the preparation for the catch occurs Stages of a stroke Drive The drive is the phase from the catch to the extraction. *As soon as the oar blade is placed in the water at the catch, the rower begins to lever the boat past the blade by straightening the legs while the body remains leaned forward and the ...

Literary Extract
Literary fragments may comprise: * works inadvertently left unfinished or never completed by their authors * surviving extracts of larger works subsequently lost as wholes * works deliberately constructed as fragmentary pieces The deliberately undeveloped literary sort of fragment played an especially important role in literary Romanticism. German literature of the Romantic period has left many such fragments. In English literature, note Coleridge's unfinished (but published as a fragment in 1816) "Kubla Khan; or, A Vision in a Dream: A Fragment". In contemporary literature Dimitris Lyacos employs fragment sequences in order to develop an elliptical narrative alluding to a universe of unattainability and loss. See also * ''Fragmente der griechischen Historiker ''Die Fragmente der griechischen Historiker'', commonly abbreviated ''FGrHist'' or ''FGrH'' (''Fragments of the Greek Historians''), is a collection by Felix Jacoby of the works of those ancient Greek historians whose wor ...

Extraction (military)
In military tactics, extraction (also exfiltration or exfil) is the process of removing personnel when it is considered imperative that they be immediately relocated out of a hostile environment and taken to an area either occupied or controlled by friendly personnel. Extraction is not always used during hostile environments, but can be used or referred to during training environments as well. There are primarily two kinds of extraction: * Friendly: The subject involved is willing and is expected to cooperate with the personnel implementing the operation, when referring to enemy prisoners of war or being taken to captivity. * Hostile: The subject involved is unwilling and is being transferred by forceful coercion with the possibility/likelihood of engaging enemy personnel in any area either in and/or around the extraction zone. An example of a hostile extraction was the capture and transportation to Israel for trial of the German Nazi war criminal Adolf Eichmann by Israel's Mo ...
