Glen Gann "Buck" Varner (August 17, 1930 – April 29, 2000) was an American professional baseball player. The outfielder, a native of Hixson, Tennessee, appeared in two Major League games for the Washington Senators during the 1952 season. Varner's Major League trial came at the end of the 1952 minor league season, when he batted .290 with four home runs with Washington's Double-A farm club, the Chattanooga Lookouts. On September 19, he started in left field at Griffith Stadium against the Boston Red Sox, and was hitless in four plate appearances, with a base on balls, against Sid Hudson. W. L. "Willie" Varner (May 22, 1926 – January 20, 2009) was a high school football coach. He coached for 42 seasons (1954–96) at Woodruff High School in Woodruff, South Carolina, amassing 383 victories, 10 state titles, and 28 conference titles. Coach Varner was given the Order of the Palmetto, the highest honor given to a South Carolina civilian, in 1996. Background Varner was born in Gaffney, SC and attended Spartanburg High School. Tom Varner (born June 17, 1957 in Morristown, New Jersey, United States) is an American jazz horn (French horn) player and composer. Varner grew up in Millburn, New Jersey, and studied piano in his youth with Capitola Dickerson of Summit, New Jersey. He holds a B.M. degree (1979) from the New England Conservatory of Music, where he studied jazz improvisation and composition with Ran Blake, George Russell, and Jaki Byard, and horn with Thomas Newell. He also studied briefly in 1976 with jazz horn pioneer Julius Watkins. Varner also holds an M.A. (2005) from the City College of New York, where he studied with Jim McNeely, Scott Reeves, and John Patitucci. Nick Varner (born May 15, 1948, in Owensboro, Kentucky) is an American pool player who was inducted into the Billiard Congress of America Hall of Fame in 1992. Varner is a world champion and has won back to back U.S. Open 9-Ball Championships, in addition to winning the 1999 WPA World Nine-ball Championship at 51 years old. Career Nick D. Varner graduated from Tell City High School in Tell City, Indiana in 1966. Varner learned to play pool in his father's (Nick Varner) pool hall in Grandview, Indiana. Martin Varner (March 3, 1785 – February 14, 1844) was one of the original American settlers in Mexican Texas, known as the Old Three Hundred, and was a veteran of the Texas Revolution. Early life Born in German Township, Fayette County, Pennsylvania, he moved with his family to Warren County, Ohio in 1791. In 1815, Varner moved to Arkansas Territory and joined with a group of like-minded individuals who moved on to the land south of the Red River.
