The Princess (Tennyson Poem)
''The Princess'' is a serio-comic blank verse narrative poem, written by Alfred Tennyson, published in 1847. Tennyson was Poet Laureate of the United Kingdom from 1850 to 1892 and remains one of the most popular English poets.See, for example, Tucker (2009), forward The poem tells the story of a heroic princess who forswears the world of men and founds a women's university where men are forbidden to enter. The prince to whom she was betrothed in infancy enters the university with two friends, disguised as women students. They are discovered and flee, but eventually they fight a battle for the princess's hand. They lose and are wounded, but the women nurse the men back to health. Eventually the princess returns the prince's love. Several later works have been based upon the poem, including Gilbert and Sullivan's 1884 comic opera ''Princess Ida''. Background Tennyson planned the poem in the late 1830s after discussing the idea with Emily Sellwood, whom he later married in 18 ...

The Princess (Maykov Poem)
''The Princess'' (russian: Княжна, Knyazhna) is a poem by Apollon Maykov first published in the January 1878 issue of ''The Russian Messenger''. It told the story of a young Russian girl belonging to a noble family who joined a group of radical youth fighting against the repressive state. The poem, condemned by the Russian literary left of the time, in retrospect is seen as a strong political statement attacking both the corrupt political system of mid-19th-century Russia, based on serfdom and the violent methods of undermining it, as professed by the 'nihilistic' youth of the time. Background Initially the target of Maykov's satire was serfdom, and in the poem's early versions, the heroine was a young conservative woman. Later Princess Zhenya turned into a rebel who detested the environment that she had been brought up in, but still in some ways was corrupted by it. Finally, the author has made his heroine a symbol of the Russian cultural elite's infatuation with the Sociali ...

The Princess (Killigrew)
''The Princess, or Love at First Sight'' is a Caroline era stage play, a tragicomedy written by Thomas Killigrew. The play was most likely written c. 1636, while Killigrew was travelling in Italy, and was acted on the stage c. 1638, by Queen Henrietta's Men at the Cockpit Theatre. Genre As with his two previous plays, '' The Prisoners'' and '' Claricilla'', Killigrew chose to work in the tragicomic genre for ''The Princess''. He was working in the dramatic style favoured at the court of Queen Henrietta Maria. Tragicomedy, coloured by Neoplatonism and Platonic love influences, was the fashion in which courtier dramatists like William Cartwright, Sir John Suckling, and Lodowick Carlell were casting their dramas in the 1630s. Publication Though written and acted late in the Caroline era, ''The Princess'' was not published until its inclusion in ''Comedies and Tragedies'', the collected edition of Killigrew's plays issued by Henry Herringman in 1664. (Like some other plays in th ...
