Brixton Academy
Brixton Academy (originally known as the Astoria Variety Cinema, previously known as Carling Academy Brixton, currently named O2 Academy Brixton as part of a sponsorship deal with the O2 brand) is a mid-sized concert venue located in South West London, in the Lambeth district of Brixton. Opening in 1929 as a cinema, the venue was converted into a discotheque in 1972, then reborn as a concert hall in 1983. It is owned by the Academy Music Group, and has become one of London's leading music venues, hosting over 50 live albums, and winning the NME Best Venue 12 times since 1994. It has been home to several notable performances, including The Smiths' last gig (December 1986), Leftfield's June 1996 concert which set a decibel record for a live gig at 137db, and Madonna's gig in 2000, which was watched by an online audience of 9 million. ''Live at the Brixton Academy'' is a recording of The Brian May Band's first show in London on June 15, 1993. The album was released on CD, Cassette, LP and VHS in 1994, and remains the group's only release as a collective. Overview The album is an almost complete and unedited version of the concert. Their performance of John Lennon's " God (The Dream Is Over)" was not included on the album due to copyright issues. Keyboard player Spike Edney had to play a second solo (neither are on the CD, the first being on the video) after May had technical problems before playing "Last Horizon". Also, "Back To The Light", "Tie Your Mother Down", "Love Token", "Headlong", "Let Your Heart Rule Your Head", "Resurrection" (in particular, Cozy Powell's drum solo), "We Will Rock You" and "Hammer to Fall" are all slightly shortened on the CD, but appear in full on the 90-minute video of the same event. Gary Numan Discography
The following is a comprehensive discography of Gary Numan, a British singer and musician. Numan (born Gary Webb, 1958) released his first record in 1978 as part of the outfit Tubeway Army. Initially unsuccessful, the band scored a huge hit in 1979 with the single " Are Friends Electric" and their second album '' Replicas'', both of which reached number one in the UK. Numan then decided to release further recordings under his own name, beginning with the single " Cars" later in 1979. Both this and the subsequent album '' The Pleasure Principle'' also reached number one in the UK, and Numan became a leading force in the British electronic music scene. He scored a third number one album in 1980 with '' Telekon'', and more hit singles and albums until the mid 1980s when his popularity waned. Inspiral Carpets
Inspiral Carpets are an English rock band, part of the late-1980s/early-1990s Madchester movement. Formed in Oldham in 1980, the band's most successful lineup featured frontman Tom Hingley, drummer Craig Gill, guitarist Graham Lambert, bassist Martyn Walsh and keyboardist Clint Boon. Several line-ups were loosely used from 1980 until Lambert and singer Stephen Holt met at The Moor End indie disco in Oldham 1983. Holt sang on the first two independent singles. Holt departed the band before they signed with Mute Records,Thompson, Dave (2000) ''Alternative Rock'', Miller Freeman, , p.425-427 Inspiral Carpets was known for using organs and distorted guitars with influences from psychedelic rock.
