Kōji Kumeta
is a Japanese manga artist. His most famous works are ''Go!! Southern Ice Hockey Club'', ''Katteni Kaizō'', ''Sayonara, Zetsubou-Sensei'', and ''Joshiraku''. The bulk of Kumeta's work was published in ''Weekly Shōnen Sunday'', until the abrupt cancellation of ''Katteni Kaizō'', which resulted in him transferring from Shogakukan to Kodansha. As of 2014, he has gone freelance. His most recent serializations were ''Studio Pulp'' for ''Rakuen Le Paradis'' of Hakusensha and ''Kakushigoto'' in ''Monthly Shōnen Magazine'', both of which concluded their run in 2020. ''Sayonara, Zetsubou-Sensei'' was his first work to be adapted into an anime and was awarded the 31st Kodansha Manga Award in the ''shōnen'' category. A is a comic artist who writes and/or illustrates manga. As of 2006, about 3,000 professional manga artists were working in Japan. Most manga artists study at an art college or manga school or take on an apprenticeship with another artist before entering the industry as a primary creator. More rarely a manga artist breaks into the industry directly, without previously being an assistant. For example, Naoko Takeuchi, author of '' Sailor Moon'', won a Kodansha Manga Award contest and manga pioneer Osamu Tezuka was first published while studying an unrelated degree, without working as an assistant. A manga artist will rise to prominence through recognition of their ability when they spark the interest of institutions, individuals or a demographic of manga consumers.
