Kasparov And The Machine
''Game Over: Kasparov and the Machine'' is a 2003 documentary film by Vikram Jayanti about the match between Garry Kasparov, the highest rated chess player in history (at the time), the World Champion for 15 years (1985–2000) and an anti-communist politician, and Deep Blue, a chess-playing computer created by IBM. It was coproduced by Alliance Atlantis and the National Film Board of Canada. Synopsis Kasparov had beaten Deep Blue, a computer designed specifically to beat him, in a match played in 1996. He agreed to offer a rematch the following year. Kasparov won the first game of the rematch easily with the white pieces. In the second game, Kasparov was struggling with the black pieces, but set a trap that most computers fall for. Deep Blue didn't fall for it and won to level the match. Vikram Jayanti
Vikram Teja Jayanti is an Indian-American documentary filmmaker responsible for a number of well known full-feature documentary films. Two films he has production credits on have received Academy Awards for Best Full-Feature Documentary: he was a co-producer of the 1997 blockbuster ''When We Were Kings'' and a creative consultant on 2005's ''Born Into Brothels''. A sampling of his other work includes ''Innocents Abroad'', '' The Man Who Bought Mustique'', '' James Ellroy's Feast of Death'', '' Game Over: Kasparov and the Machine'', ''Lincoln'' and ''The Agony and the Ecstasy of Phil Spector''. He and his films have also won a number of other awards, including the Special Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival, and have been nominated for others. Game 6 of the Deep Blue–Kasparov rematch, played in New York City on May 11, 1997 and starting at 3:00 p.m. EDT, was the last chess game in the 1997 rematch of Deep Blue versus Garry Kasparov. Deep Blue had been further strengthened from the previous year's match with Kasparov and was unofficially nicknamed "Deeper Blue". Before this game the score was tied at 2½–2½: Kasparov had won the first game, lost the second game, and drawn games 3, 4, and 5 (after having advantageous positions in all three). The loss marked the first time that a computer had defeated a World Champion in a match of several games. This, as well as the fact that Kasparov had lasted only 19 moves in a game lasting barely more than an hour, attracted much media attention.
