Greenville is a city in and the county seat of Washington County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 34,400 at the 2010 census. It is located in the area of historic cotton plantations and culture known as the Mississippi Delta. History Early history This area was occupied by indigenous peoples for thousands of years. When the French explored here, they encountered the historic Natchez people. As part of their colony known as ''La Louisiane'', the French established a settlement at what became Natchez, Mississippi. Other Native American tribes also lived in what is now known as Mississippi. The current city of Greenville is the third in the State to bear the name. History Greenville is named after its founder, John Green, who settled in the wilderness of the southwest part of Montcalm County in 1844. Old Greenville, Mississippi
Old Greenville is a ghost town in Jefferson County, Mississippi, United States. The town was located along the old Natchez Trace and was once the largest town along the Trace. Nothing exists at the site today except the town's cemetery. History Old Greenville was located on Coles Creek, approximately northeast of Natchez. The area around Old Greenville was settled prior to 1798 and was originally known as Greenbay in honor of a local landowner, Henry Green. It was then known as Huntley, in honor of Abijah Hunt, who operated a store and the first cotton gin in Jefferson County in the area. In 1803, multiple landowners (including Ferdinand Claiborne), donated land that became part of the town of Greenville, named in honor of General Nathanael Greene. Greenville is a city in Clay County, Iowa, United States. The population was 71 in the 2020 census, a decline from 93 in 2000. History The Greenville post office opened in 1871. The town was named for its first postmaster, A. W. Green. Bank robbery of 1901 On November 16, 1901, one Mr. Brown opened the bank in Greenville and discovered that the bank had been robbed. The vault handle had been removed, explosives placed into the opening, and the vault door blown off. Three men were seen later in Spencer, then Webb, and finally Albert City where they were cornered at the depot. A gunfight ensued, during which one of the gunmen was killed. The other two were captured and later sentenced to life terms in Fort Madison, while the dead gunman was buried in an unnamed grave in Fairfield Cemetery in Albert City. History Founding Greenville was platted in 1816 by Andrew Mundell and Benjamin Haines some three years before Floyd County was established. Greenville is a city located on U.S. Route 67 near the intersection with Route D and E in Wayne County, Missouri, United States, along the St. Francis River.
