Dog Days
The dog days or are the hot, sultry days of summer. They were historically the period following the heliacal rising of the star system Sirius (known colloquially as the "Dog Star"), which Hellenistic astrology connected with heat, drought, sudden thunderstorms, lethargy, fever, mad dogs, and bad luck. They are now taken to be the hottest, most uncomfortable part of summer in the Northern Hemisphere. Etymology The English name is a calque of the Latin ' (."the puppy days"), itself a calque of the ancient Greek ''kynádes hēmérai''.. The Greeks knew the star α Canis Majoris by several names, including Sirius "Scorcher" (, ''Seírios''), Sothis (, ''Sôthis'', a transcription of Egyptian '' Spdt''), and the Dog Star (, ''Kúōn'').. Daniel Lyons
Daniel Lyons (born 1960) is an American writer. He was a senior editor at ''Forbes'' magazine and a writer at ''Newsweek'' before becoming editor of ReadWrite. In March 2013 he left ''ReadWrite'' to accept a position at HubSpot. Lyons is the author of a book of short stories, ''The Last Good Man'' (1993); a novel, ''Dog Days'' (1998); and a fictional biography, ''Options: The Secret Life of Steve Jobs, a Parody'' (2007). ''Dog Days'' is an opera by David T. Little, to a libretto by Royce Vavrek after the short story by Judy Budnitz. Performance history ''Dog Days'' was produced by Peak Performances @Montclair State (New Jersey) in association with Beth Morrison Projects, and had its world premiere run from September 29 to October 7, 2012. Robert Woodruff directed the production that starred Lauren Worsham and performance artist John Kelly. Scenic and video design was created by Jim Findlay, costume design by Vita Tzykun, and sound design by Matt Frey. Alan Pierson was the production's Musical Director and conductor, with new music ensemble Newspeak serving as the on-stage band. "Dog Days Are Over" is a song by English indie rock band Florence and the Machine from their debut album ''Lungs'' (2009). It was originally scheduled for release on 24 November 2008 through Moshi Moshi Records in the UK as the album's second single, but was later pushed back for release on 1 December 2008. A day later on 2 December 2008 the single was released in download and seven-inch vinyl format through IAMSOUND Records in the US. The B-side to the single is a cover of "You Got the Love" by The Source featuring Candi Staton which later was confirmed as a track on their debut album and the band's fifth single. The single reached the top 30 in Canada, Ireland, the United Kingdom, and the United States. A demo version of "Dog Days Are Over" is featured on disc two of the deluxe edition of ''Lungs''. Cecil Charles Windsor Aldin (28 April 1870 – 6 January 1935), was a British artist and illustrator best known for his paintings and sketches of animals, sports, and rural life. Aldin executed village scenes and rural buildings in chalk, pencil and also wash sketching. He was an enthusiastic sportsman and a Master of Fox Hounds, and many of his pictures illustrated hunting.
