Cattle Drive
''Cattle Drive'' is a 1951 American Western film directed by Kurt Neumann and starring Joel McCrea, Dean Stockwell and Chill Wills. Much of the film was shot in the Death Valley National Park, California and Paria, Utah. Plot Chester Graham Jr. (Dean Stockwell), the spoiled young son of a wealthy railroad owner, gets lost in the middle of nowhere when he wanders away from a train during a water stop. He is found by a cowboy (Joel McCrea) who is part of a cattle drive. Lucky to be alive, the boy has to tag along with the cowboys. He learns the value of hard work, self-discipline and comradeship while working with the men on the trail to Santa Fe. Influences The basic story—about a rich brat who gets lost in a dangerous place far from home, then learns character and values from the working men who rescue him—echoes that of 1937's Oscar-winning film ''Captains Courageous'', adapted from a novel by Rudyard Kipling. Kurt Neumann (director)
Kurt Neumann (5 April 1908 – 21 August 1958) was a German Hollywood (film industry), Hollywood film director who specialized in science fiction movies in his later career. Biography Born in Nuremberg, the son of a manufacturer of tin stamps studied music in several German cities, including Berlin. In 1926 he directed his first short movie. Neumann came to the U.S. in the early talkie era, hired to direct German language versions of Hollywood films. Once he mastered English and established himself as technically proficient in filmmaking, Neumann directed such low-budget programmers as ''The Big Cage'' (1932), ''Secret of the Blue Room'' (1933) with Paul Lukas and Gloria Stuart, ''Hold 'Em Navy'' (1936), ''It Happened in New Orleans (1936 film), It Happened in New Orleans'' (1936) with child star Bobby Breen, ''Wide Open Faces'' (1937) with Joe E. ''Captains Courageous'' is a 1937 Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer adventure film. Based on the 1897 novel of the same name by Rudyard Kipling, the film had its world premiere at the Carthay Circle Theatre in Los Angeles. It was produced by Louis D. Lighton and directed by Victor Fleming. Filmed in black and white, ''Captains Courageous'' was advertised by MGM as a coming-of-age classic with exciting action sequences. A cattle drive is the process of moving a herd of cattle from one place to another, usually moved and herded by cowboys on horses. Europe In medieval central Europe, annual cattle drives brought Hungarian Grey cattle across the Danube River to the beef markets of Western Europe. In the 16th century the Swiss operated cattle drives over the St. Gotthard Pass to the markets in Bellinzona and Lugano and into Lombardy in northern Italy. The drives had ended by 1700 when sedentary dairy farming proved more profitable. In the eighteenth century up to 80,000 cattle were driven South from Scotland each year. Paria or Pahreah (, rhymes with "Maria"), is a ghost town on the Paria River in Grand Staircase–Escalante National Monument in central Kane County, Utah, United States. It was inhabited from 1870 to 1929, and later used as a filming location. History The area was first settled in 1865 by a Mormon group led by Peter Shirts. This early settlement was named ''Rockhouse'', for Shirts's strongly built sandstone house. After the end of the Black Hawk War in 1867 settlers began to arrive at a rapid pace. Farming produced good crops for several years, but irrigation was very difficult; each spring the surface runoff water was absorbed into the desert soil too quickly to properly water the fields. Griff Barnett (born Manley Griffith, November 12, 1884 – January 12, 1958) was an American actor.(17 January 1958) ''The New York Times'' Barnett was born in Blue Ridge, Texas in 1884. In the early 20th century, Barnett was a member of the Mack-Hillard stock theater company in Wichita, Kansas. He also worked with stock theater companies in the Chicago area. He played the role of the Rexall family druggist in commercials on ''The Phil Harris-Alice Faye Show'' on radio in the late 1940s and early 1950s. He also appeared in numerous films from the 1930s through the 1950s, including '' To Each His Own'' (1946), '' Apartment for Peggy'' (1948), and '' Pinky'' (1949).
