The Stand
''The Stand'' is a post-apocalyptic dark fantasy novel written by American author Stephen King and first published in 1978 by Doubleday. The plot centers on a deadly pandemic of weaponized influenza and its aftermath, in which the few surviving humans gather into factions that are each led by a personification of either good or evil and seem fated to clash with each other. King started writing the story in February 1975, seeking to create an epic in the spirit of ''The Lord of the Rings''. The book was difficult for him to write because of the large number of characters and storylines. In 1990, ''The Stand'' was reprinted as a ''Complete and Uncut Edition''. King restored over 400 pages from texts that were initially reduced from his original manuscript, revised the order of the chapters, shifted the novel's setting from 1980 to 10 years forward, and accordingly corrected a number of cultural references. "Night Surf" is a post-apocalyptic short story by Stephen King, first published in the spring 1969 issue of ''Ubris'' magazine and later collected in a revised version in King's 1978 in literature, 1978 collection ''Night Shift (short story collection), Night Shift''. Plot summary On an August night on Anson Beach, New Hampshire, a group of former college students have survived a plague caused by a virus called A6, or "The Stand, Captain Trips". They believe the virus spread out of Southeast Asia and wiped out most of humanity. The characters' outlook is grim. They encounter a delirious man dying of the plague and burn him on a pyre as a half-serious black-magic human sacrifice. This is a list of characters from the ''Wild Cards'' book series. Astronomer The Astronomer is a character from the ''Wild Cards'' series of books. He first appeared in the short story "Pennies from Hell" by Lewis Shiner in '' Wild Cards II: Aces High'', though his presence was earlier implied in "The Long, Dark Night of Fortunato" in the first volume of the series. Leader of a cult consisting mainly of superhuman aces and deformed jokers known as the Egyptian Freemasons. The Astronomer planned to conquer the world in the aftermath of an invasion by fungoid aliens called the Swarm. Jerome John Garcia (August 1, 1942 – August 9, 1995) was an American musician best known for being the principal songwriter, lead guitarist, and a vocalist with the rock band Grateful Dead, which he co-founded and which came to prominence during the counterculture of the 1960s. Alfred Matthew Hubbard (July 24, 1901 – August 31, 1982), was an early proponent for the drug LSD during the 1950s. He is reputed to have been the "Johnny Appleseed of LSD" and the first person to emphasize LSD's potential as a visionary or transcendental drug. Career In 1920, Hubbard was publicized in West Coast newspapers as having developed a free energy motor, though a '' Popular Science'' article published in 1928 referred to it as a hoax. In 1929, he received for a radioactive "Internal Combustion Engine Spark Plug" device, which was manufactured sparingly by at least one U.S. company. It used an electrode doped with polonium 210, a radioactive isotope with a half-life of 138 days. The supposed "ionizing effect" of polonium 210 upon the combustion gases in the spark gap was purported to "improve engine efficiency". Motion was said to be among Hubbard's passions.
