Belfort (; archaic german: Beffert/Beffort) is a city in the Bourgogne-Franche-Comté Regions of France, region in Northeastern France, situated between Lyon and Strasbourg, approximately from the France–Switzerland border. It is the Prefectures in France, prefecture of the Territoire de Belfort Departments of France, department. Belfort is from Paris, from Strasbourg, from Lyon and from Zürich. The residents of the city are called "Belfortains". The city is located on the river Savoureuse, on a strategically important natural route between the Rhine and the Rhône – the Belfort Gap (''Trouée de Belfort'') or Burgundian Gate (''Porte de Bourgogne''). In France, a prefecture (french: préfecture) may be: * the ''chef-lieu de département'', the commune in which the administration of a department is located; * the ''chef-lieu de région'', the commune in which the administration of a region is located; * the jurisdiction of a prefecture; * the official residence or headquarters of a prefect.
