Zykov Glacier
Zykov Glacier () is a valley glacier in northern Victoria Land, Antarctica, east of Saddle Peak and Mount Kostka in the Anare Mountains. It is about 25 miles (40 km) long, and flows northwest, reaching the Pennell Coast between Cape Williams and Cooper Bluffs. Photographed by the Soviet Antarctic Expedition from the survey ship ''Ob'' in 1958, it was named by them for student navigator Ye. Zykov, who died in Antarctica, February 3, 1957. The underlying rock includes micaceous phyllite and micaceous schist; it was estimated by radioisotope dating ( potassium–argon) in 1964 to be 410 or 420 million years old. Phyllite
Phyllite ( ) is a type of foliated metamorphic rock created from slate that is further metamorphosed so that very fine grained white mica achieves a preferred orientation.Stephen Marshak ''Essentials of Geology'', 3rd ed. It is primarily composed of quartz, sericite mica, and chlorite. Phyllite has fine-grained mica flakes, whereas slate has extremely fine mica flakes, and schist has large mica flakes, all mica flakes of which have achieved a preferred orientation. Among foliated metamorphic rocks, it represents a gradation in the degree of metamorphism between slate and schist. Zykov Island
Zykov Island () is a small island between Fulmar Island and Buromskiy Island in the Haswell Islands, near Queen Mary Land on Antarctica. It was discovered and first mapped by the Australasian Antarctic Expedition under Douglas Mawson of 1911–14 but mistakenly identified as part of Fulmar Island. Remapped by the Soviet expedition of 1956, it was named for Ye. Zykov, a student navigator who died in Antarctica on 3 February 1957. Research has been done around the island. Because of its remoteness, the undisturbed benthic zone of Zykov Island was studied from 1970 to 1972, with underwater dives and sample collections. A decade later, the University of Canterbury studied '' Paramoera walkeri'' on Zykov Island and elsewhere in the Antarctic. List Of Glaciers In The Antarctic
There are many glaciers in the Antarctic. This set of lists does not include ice sheets, ice caps or ice fields, such as the Antarctic ice sheet, but includes glacial features that are defined by their flow, rather than general bodies of ice. The lists include outlet glaciers, valley glaciers, cirque glaciers, tidewater glaciers and ice streams. The original rock (protolith) is subjected to temperatures greater than and, often, elevated pressure of or more, causing profound physical or chemical changes. Potassium–argon dating, abbreviated K–Ar dating, is a radiometric dating method used in geochronology and archaeology. It is based on measurement of the product of the radioactive decay of an isotope of potassium (K) into argon (Ar). Potassium is a common element found in many materials, such as feldspars, micas, clay minerals, tephra, and evaporites. In these materials, the decay product is able to escape the liquid (molten) rock, but starts to accumulate when the rock solidifies ( recrystallizes). The amount of argon sublimation that occurs is a function of the purity of the sample, the composition of the mother material, and a number of other factors. The Soviet Antarctic Expedition (SAE or SovAE) (russian: Советская антарктическая экспедиция, САЭ, ''Sovetskaya antarkticheskaya ekspeditsiya'') was part of the Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute of the Soviet Committee on Antarctic Research of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR.
