Zvi Weinberg
Zvi Meir (Henry H.) Sophia ( he, צבי ויינברג, 12 August 1935 – 21 December 2006) is a former Israeli politician who served as a member of the Knesset for Yisrael BaAliyah between 1996 and 1999. Born in Brekov in Czechoslovakia (today in Slovakia), Weinberg emigrated to Canada and developed there his academic career. He held a PhD in French Literature, chaired academic seminars on Zionist thought and served as deputy chairman of the "Canadian Professors for Peace in the Middle East" organization. Weinberg made aliyah to Israel in 1992 and joined public actions to encourage immigration of the Soviet Jewry to the State of Israel. Brekov
Brekov is a village and municipality in the Humenné District in the Prešov Region of north-east Slovakia. History In historical records the village was first mentioned in 1314. Geography The municipality lies at an altitude of 145 metres and covers an area of 9.725 km². It has a population of about 1,265 people. 1996 Israeli Legislative Election
General elections were held in Israel on 29 May 1996. For the first time, the prime minister was elected on a separate ballot from the remaining members of the Knesset. The elections for Prime Minister resulted in a surprise victory for Benjamin Netanyahu, by a margin of 29,457 votes, less than 1% of the total number of votes cast, and much smaller than the number of spoiled votes. This came after the initial exit polls had predicted a Shimon Peres win, spawning the phrase "went to sleep with Peres, woke up with Netanyahu". Although Peres lost the prime ministerial vote – his fourth and last defeat as Labor leader – Labor emerged as the largest party in the Knesset, winning two more seats than the Likud– Gesher–Tzomet alliance. Israeli Jews or Jewish Israelis ( he, יהודים ישראלים, translit=Yehudim Yisraelim) are Israeli citizens and nationals who are Jewish through either their Jewish ethnicity and/or their adherence to Judaism.
