Zuidbroek, Groningen
Zuidbroek (; Gronings: ''Zuudbrouk'') is a village in the Dutch province of Groningen. It is located in the municipality of Midden-Groningen, about 6 km north of Veendam. History Zuidbroek was a separate municipality until 1965, when it became a part of Oosterbroek. Oosterbroek was merged with Meeden and Muntendam in 1990 and renamed to Menterwolde a year later. Meeden
Meeden is a village in the municipality of Midden-Groningen in the province of Groningen, Netherlands. History The village was first mentioned in 1391 as de Medum, and means "settlement near the hay lands". Meeden is a road village which developed on the sandy ridge on the border with the Oldambt and the peat colonies. It was founded in the 11th century as a satellite of the former village , but moved southwards during the 15th century. The Dutch Reformed church dates from around 1400 and has an attached tower which was built around 1500. Meeden was home to 1,231 people in 1840. It was an independent municipality until the municipal restructuring in 1990, after which Meeden became a part of the municipality of Menterwolde. The Harlingen–Nieuweschans railway is a railway line in the Netherlands running from the port of Harlingen to Bad Nieuweschans, passing through Leeuwarden and Groningen. Zuidbroek Railway Station
Zuidbroek (; abbreviation: Zb) is an unstaffed railway station in Zuidbroek in the Netherlands. It is located on the Harlingen–Nieuweschans railway between Sappemeer Oost and Scheemda, and at the northern end of the Stadskanaal–Zuidbroek railway after Veendam in the province of Groningen. The station building was designed by Karel Hendrik van Brederode and completed in 1865. Train services started on 1 May 1868. The Noord-Nederlands Trein & Tram Museum has been housed in the station building since 2014. At the station are four tracks and three platforms. The three local train services are operated by Arriva. The one and only bus connection is operated by Qbuzz and Taxi de Grooth. Muntendam
Muntendam is a village in the municipality of Midden-Groningen, in the Dutch province of Groningen. Until 1990 it was a separate municipality, which boasted the title 'reddest (most socialist) municipality in the Netherlands', with a council of 11 containing 7 PvdA (Labour Party) members and 2 CPN (Communist Party) members. (However, nearby Reiderland had had a vast CPN majority since WWII, so the claim is rather too strong). When a new mayor had to be appointed in 1980 (at the time a municipality had no say in the matter), it was assumed that it would become a PvdA mayor as it had always been. However, the then minister of the interior, Hans Wiegel of the right-wing VVD, decided that this very left-wing part of the Netherlands needed a change and appointed a D66 (left of centre) mayor.
