Zone 9 Bloggers
The Zone 9 bloggers are a blogging collective from Ethiopia, who maintain a blog in Amharic. On 25 and 26 April 2014, the Ethiopian government arrested six members of the Zone 9 bloggers network and three other journalists, who faced terrorism charges for their writing at the time. The action had sparked an online protest. They were additionally charged with conspiracy for using basic online encryption tools that journalists routinely use to protect their sources. The arrested bloggers and journalists received training in digital security from the Tactical Technology Collective / Front Line Defenders ''Security in a Box'' program. Kaliti Prison
Kaliti Prison'' is a maximum security prison in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Commonly referred to as a gulag, it serves as the main prison of the country. It is 11 km south of central Addis Ababa, in Akaky Kaliti, the southernmost subcity of the nation's capital. The original prison compound is a makeshift structure that was built after 1991 when the Derg regime fell and was not intended as a prison. Most of the structures built by 2004 had been built by prisoners by their own means and with help from NGOs. Description Part of the prison consists of sheet-metal shacks arranged in a dense maze. The African Charter on Human and Peoples' Rights (also known as the Banjul Charter) is an international human rights instrument that is intended to promote and protect human rights and basic freedoms in the African continent. Zelalem Kibret
Zelalem Kibret is an Ethiopian human rights activist and legal scholar. He emigrated to the US in 2016. Early life and education Kibret grew interested in politics from a young age due to the Soviet-era literature in his childhood home, and from hearing of the violence following the contested 2005 Ethiopian general election, the first in which he could vote. Kibret worked with the Ethiopian Human Rights Council. He did his LLM at Addis Ababa University, and became a lawyer. Career Kibret was appointed professor of law at Ambo University. IIn 2011, Kibret turned to blogging as a medium for discussing Ethiopian human rights, after the newspaper Addis Neger was shut down by the government.
