Zita Linker
Zita Linker ( he, ציטה לינקר, born 1 March 1917, died 26 January 2009) was an Israeli politician who briefly served as a member of the Knesset for Likud in 1977. Biography Born in Vienna in Austria-Hungary, Linker attended high school in her home city, and university in London. She emigrated to Mandatory Palestine in 1934. She joined the General Zionists, which merged into the Liberal Party in 1959. She became a member of the Board of Liberal Women, and of the party's central committee and executive council, as well as serving as a delegate to various Zionist Congresses. In 1973 she was on the Likud list (an alliance of the Liberal Party, Herut and several other right-wing parties) for the Knesset elections that year. 1977 Israeli Legislative Election
Legislative elections were held in Israel on 17 May 1977 to elect the ninth Knesset. For the first time in Israeli political history, the right wing, led by Likud, won a plurality of seats, ending almost 30 years of rule by the left-wing Alignment and its predecessor, Mapai. The dramatic shift in Israeli politics caused by the outcome led to it becoming known as "the revolution" (Hebrew: המהפך, ''HaMahapakh''), a phrase coined by TV anchor Haim Yavin when he announced the election results live on television with the words "Ladies and gentlemen—a revolution!" It was founded in 1973 by Menachem Begin and Ariel Sharon in an alliance with several right-wing parties. Likud's landslide victory in the 1977 elections was a major turning point in the country's political history, marking the first time the left had lost power. Shmuel M. Tamir ( he, שמואל תמיר, born Shmuel Katznelson; 10 March 1923 – 29 June 1987) was a prominent Israeli independence fighter, lawyer, patriot and Knesset member. After a successful career fighting the British he entered the Knesset from 1965 to 1980, rising to become Minister of Justice in the government of Menachem Begin from 1977 until 1980. Tamir was an ardent anti-Nazi leading proactive legal cases to prosecute perpetrators of the Holocaust and war criminals. Tamir's maverick politics finally led him into an independent politician after several attempts of coalition with nationalist right-wing parties.
