Ziad Majed
Ziad Majed ( ar, زياد ماجد) is a Lebanese/French political researcher and university professor. He holds a PhD in political sciences from Sciences Po Paris. He teaches Middle Eastern studies and International Relations at the American University of Paris and writes articles, papers and studies on reforms, democratic transitions, elections, civil society and citizenship in Lebanon, Syria and the Arab region. International IDEA and other institutes, journals and newspapers in Paris, London and Beirut published many of these research papers and articles. After working for 10 years at the Lebanese Red Cross and the Lebanese Center for Policy Studies, he contributed in 2004 to the foundation of the Democratic Left Movement (along with the late Samir Kassir, Elias Khoury and many intellectuals, politicians, students and militants), and participated in the peaceful Independence Uprising in March 2005 against the Syrian regime's hegemony and political assassinations. Elias Khoury
Elias Khoury ( ar, إلياس خوري; born 12 July 1948) is a Lebanese novelist, and prominent public intellectual. Accordingly, he has published myriad novels related to literary criticism, which have been translated into several foreign languages, including English. Khoury has also written three plays and two screenplays. Khoury has been an editor of famous Lebanese newspapers. Between 1993 and 2009, he served as an editor of ''Al-Mulhaq'', the weekly cultural supplement of the Lebanese daily newspaper '' Al-Nahar.'' He also taught at universities in some Arab and European countries, and the United States. Lebanon is a parliamentary democratic republic within the overall framework of confessionalism, a form of consociationalism in which the highest offices are proportionately reserved for representatives from certain religious communities. The constitution of Lebanon grants the people the right to change their government. However, from the mid-1970s until the parliamentary elections in 1992, the Lebanese Civil War (1975–1990) precluded the exercise of political rights. According to the constitution, direct elections must be held for the parliament every four years, however after the parliamentary election in 2009 another election was not held until 2018. The Parliament, in turn, elects a President every 6 years to a single term. The President is not eligible for re-election. The last presidential election was in 2016. The Cedar Revolution ( ar, ثورة الأرز, ''thawrat al-arz'') or Independence Uprising ( ar, انتفاضة الاستقلال, ''intifāḍat al-istiqlāl'') was a chain of demonstrations in Lebanon (especially in the capital Beirut) triggered by the assassination of former Lebanese Prime Minister, Rafik Hariri. Samir Kassir ( ar, سمير قصير, 5 May 1960 – 2 June 2005) was a Lebanese-Palestinian journalist of ''An-Nahar'' and professor of history at Saint-Joseph University, who was an advocate of democracy and prominent opponent of the Syrian occupation of Lebanon. The Democratic Left Movement (DLM, ar, حركة اليسار الديمقراطي ''Harakat Al-Yassar Al-Dimuqratiy'', Arabic acronym HYD) is a nonsectarian and a democratic Left-wing politics, leftist political party.
