Zhenya Gershman
Zhenya Gershman is a U.S. painter and portraitist. She is known for her "dramatic monumental portraits of iconic public and private figures" and interest in art history. Early life Her grandfather Mikhail Matusovsky was an award-winning Ukrainian-born poet and lyricist who authored the lyrics to the song "Moscow Nights". Gershman held her first solo painting exhibition at the age of 14 in Saint Petersburg. She received her BFA from Otis Art Institute with honors and MFA from Art Center College of Design. Gershman's early mentor was Soviet artist and illustrator Orest Vereisky and she later studied under the guidance of American artist Lita Albuquerque. Artist Gershman's portraits are featured in public and private collections including Douglas Simon, Richard Weisman (she is included in the book "Picasso to Pop: The Richard Weisman Collection") and the J. Zhenya Gay (born Eleanor Byrnes) (1906–1978) was an American writer and illustrator. Biography Eleanor Barnes was born in 1906 in Norwood, Massachusetts and, died August 3, 1978. She attended Columbia University, where she studied with Solon Borglum and Winold Reiss. Her first artistic jobs as a freelancer were creating movie posters, newspaper advertisements, and costume designs for theater productions. She spent several years traveling and living in Europe, Mexico, and Central America. In 1954, she left New York City for the Catskill Mountains. She was in a relationship with Jan Gay (born Helen Reitman, daughter of Ben Reitman), a children's book writer. In addition to her book illustrations, Gay also created standalone artworks, including aquatints, lithographs, and etchings. Sopkarga Mammoth
The Sopkarga mammoth, alternately spelled Sopkarginsky mammoth, and informally called Zhenya, after the nickname of its discoverer, is a woolly mammoth carcass found in October 2012. It was discovered away from the Sopkarga polar weather station on the Taymyr Peninsula in Russia. ''The Moscow News'' refers to it as the best preserved mammoth find in the past 100 years. The remains are those of a male, aged 15 to 16 years, who died c. 48,000 years ago. They weigh over , comprising the right half of the body including soft tissue, skin and hair, the skull with one ear, a tusk, bones and reproductive organs. This find is the best-preserved of its kind since another mammoth was unearthed in 1901 near the Beryozovka River in Yakutia. This makes Zhenya the second-best preserved mammoth ever found.
