Zhenhai
Zhenhai is a district and former county of the sub-provincial city of Ningbo in Zhejiang Province in eastern China. It has a population of 200,000. History The town of Zhenhai grew up at the foot of Zhaobao Hill on a tongue of land at the mouth of the Yong River about north-east of central Ningbo. Battle Of Zhenhai
The Battle of Zhenhai () was a minor confrontation that took place on 1March 1885 between Admiral Amédée Courbet's Far East Squadron (''escadre de l’extrême-Orient'') and Chinese warships and shore batteries near the coastal city of Zhenhai, downstream from Ningbo, China during the Sino-French War (August 1884April 1885). French and Chinese sources disagree sharply as to what happened; French sources treat the encounter as a minor incident, while Chinese sources consider it a striking defensive victory. The Battle of Zhenhai is still commemorated in China as an important Chinese victory in the Sino-French War. Ningbo
Ningbo (; Ningbonese: ''gnin² poq⁷'' , Standard Mandarin pronunciation: ), formerly romanized as Ningpo, is a major sub-provincial city in northeast Zhejiang province, People's Republic of China. It comprises 6 urban districts, 2 satellite county-level cities, and 2 rural counties, including several islands in Hangzhou Bay and the East China Sea. Zhaobaoshan Subdistrict
Zhaobao Mountain () also known as Zhaobao Mount or Zhaobao Hill. Located on the north bank near the mouth of the Yong River at the east end of the town of Zhenhai northeast of the city of Ningbo. Description The Zhaobao Mount Scenic Area includes walking trails on and around the hill with numerous sites to explore during a visit. Battle Of Chinhai
The Battle of Chinhai () was fought between British and Chinese forces in Chinhai ( Zhenhai), Zhejiang province, China, on the 10 October 1841 during the First Opium War. The Chinese force consisted of a garrison of Manchu and Mongol Bannermen. The British capture of this city allowed them to seize Ningpo unopposed on 13 October. Sino-French War
The Sino-French War (, french: Guerre franco-chinoise, vi, Chiến tranh Pháp-Thanh), also known as the Tonkin War and Tonquin War, was a limited conflict fought from August 1884 to April 1885. There was no declaration of war. Yong River
The Yong River (Chinese: , p ', Wu ') is one of the main rivers in China, located in Ningbo, Zhejiang Province. ''Yong'' is the name of the river, and also a short name for Ningbo, the city through which it flows. The name ''Yong'' comes from the ancient name of a mountain in the area. The First Opium War (), also known as the Opium War or the Anglo-Sino War was a series of military engagements fought between Britain and the Qing dynasty of China between 1839 and 1842. The immediate issue was the Chinese enforcement of their ban on the opium trade by seizing private opium stocks from merchants at Canton and threatening to impose the death penalty for future offenders. Despite the opium ban, the British government supported the merchants' demand for compensation for seized goods, and insisted on the principles of free trade and equal diplomatic recognition with China.
