Zbyszek Darzynkiewicz
Zbigniew (Zbyszek) Darzynkiewicz () (; born May 12, 1936, in Dzisna, Wilno Voivodeship, Poland – died February 28, 2021) was a Polish-American cell biologist active in cancer research and in developing new methods in histochemistry for flow cytometry. Early life and education From 1945 to 1949, Darzynkiewicz attended a primary school in Dzierżoniów, Poland. He spent his high school years (1949–1953) in Skarżysko-Kamienna, Poland. His application to the University of Warsaw's Department of Physics was denied by the communist Social Justice Committee, who viewed him as a "enemy of the people." However, following the intervention of Regina Uszyńska, his high school principal, Darzynkiewicz was permitted to submit an application to the Medical University of Warsaw in the fall of 1953. Wilno Voivodeship (1926–1939)
The Wilno Voivodeship ( pl, województwo wileńskie) was one of 16 Voivodeships in the Second Polish Republic, with the capital in Vilnius, Wilno (now Vilnius, Lithuania). The jurisdiction was created in 1926 and populated predominantly by Poles, with notable minorities of Belarusians, Jews and Lithuanians. Before 1926, the voivodeship's area was known as the Wilno Land; it had the same boundaries and was also within the contemporary borders of Poland at the time. Boston Biomedical Research Institute
Boston Biomedical Research Institute (BBRI) was a non-profit institution concentrating on basic biomedical research to promote the understanding of human diseases (including heart disease, cancer, muscular dystrophy and Alzheimer's etc.). It was located in Watertown, Massachusetts. History BBRI was founded in the late 1960s, and relied on federal money to fund most of its research. In 2008 it received a grant to establish a muscular dystrophy research center. In 2012, reports surfaced that the Institute was financially unsustainable. In the face of a shrinking endowment and decrease of NIH funds, the BBRI Board of Trustees recommended in September, 2012 that the Institute begin a dissolution process. The cell cycle, or cell-division cycle, is the series of events that take place in a cell that cause it to divide into two daughter cells. Cytometry
Cytometry is the measurement of number and characteristics of cell (biology), cells. Variables that can be measured by cytometric methods include cell size, cell counting, cell count, cell morphology (shape and structure), cell cycle phase, DNA content, and the existence or absence of specific proteins on the cell surface or in the cytoplasm.
