Zambian Presidential Election, 2008
Presidential elections were held in Zambia on 30 October 2008 following the death of the incumbent President Levy Mwanawasa on 19 August 2008, as the elections had to be called within 90 days of his death. It was expected that there would be internal problems within the ruling Movement for Multi-Party Democracy (MMD) as Mwanawasa had not declared a successor prior to his death, but Acting President Rupiah Banda was selected as the MMD's candidate without apparent problems. Michael Sata stood as the candidate of the Patriotic Front (PF), while Hakainde Hichilema stood as the candidate of the United Party for National Development (UPND). Godfrey Miyanda stood as the candidate of the Heritage Party. The elections were held to determine who should serve out the remainder of Mwanawasa's presidential term, which ended in 2011, rather than for a full five-year term. The rupiah (Currency symbol, symbol: Rp; ISO 4217, currency code: IDR) is the official currency of Indonesia. It is issued and controlled by Bank Indonesia. The name "Rupee, rupiah" is derived from the Sanskrit word for silver, (). Enoch Kavindele
Enoch P. Kavindele (born 7 July 1950) is a Zambian businessman and politician who served as the seventh vice-president of Zambia from 2001 until 2003. Biography Kavindele began his business career in the 1970s when he established Woodgate Holdings. He was originally a member of the United National Independence Party (UNIP) and was elected to the National Assembly in the Chingola constituency in a by-election in 1987. In 1991 he launched a leadership challenge to Kenneth Kaunda, but withdrew after receiving little support. He was the UNIP candidate in Chingola in the 1991 general elections, but was heavily defeated by Ludwig Sondashi of the Movement for Multi-Party Democracy (MMD). Ng'andu Magande
Ng'andu Peter Magande, an economist, served as the Minister of Finance and National Planning of the Republic of Zambia from 2003 to 2008. He served as a Member of Parliament for Chilanga Constituency from 2006 until 2010 and the Chairman of the MMD Party Committee on Economy and Finance. Mbita Chitala
Mbita Point is a town in the former province of Nyanza, Kenya, currently in Homa Bay County, on the shores of Lake Victoria. Vernon Mwaanga
Vernon Johnson Mwaanga (born 1944) is a Zambian diplomat and politician. Life Born near Choma, Mwaanga studied political science and international relations in the United Kingdom. In October 1964 he became Zambia's first diplomat, as deputy high commissioner in London. He was ambassador to Moscow in 1965, before returning to Zambia for two years, handling negotiations with Rhodesia as the president's permanent secretary. From 1966 to January 1972 Mwangaa was ambassador to the United Nations. In 1972 he was appointed editor of the ''Times of Zambia''. From 1973 to 1975 he was Minister of Foreign Affairs. Eastern Province (Zambia)
Eastern Province is one of Zambia's ten provinces. The province lies between the Luangwa River and borders with Malawi to the east and Mozambique to the south, from Isoka in the northeast to the north of Luangwa in the south. Maureen Mwanawasa (''née'' Kakubo; born April 28, 1963) is a legal practitioner and was once a First Lady of Zambia from 2002 to 2008.
