Maria Vladimirovna Zakharova (russian: Мария Владимировна Захарова; born 24 December 1975) is the Director of the Information and Press Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation (Spokeswoman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation) since 2015. She has a degree of Candidate in Historical Sciences, the Russian equivalent of a PhD. Early life and education Zakharova was born to a family of diplomats on 24 december 1975. Her father, Vladimir Zakharov, moved the family to Beijing in 1981 when he was appointed to the Soviet embassy there. The family left Beijing for Moscow in 1993, two years after the Soviet Union had collapsed. Her mother, Irina Zakharova, is an art historian who has worked at Moscow's Pushkin Museum. Alice Olive Zakharov (19 March 1929 – 6 March 1995) was an Australian politician. Zakharov was elected as an Australian Labor Party member of the Australian Senate in 1983. Former Senator Graham Richardson, a leader of the party's right faction, once stated that Zakharov "works hard on social issues in the chamber, but hides her light under a bushel far too successfully". She was re-elected in 1984, 1987, and 1993, and was in the midst of her final term in the Senate when she was killed in an automobile accident in early 1995. Rostislav Vladimirovich Zakharov (russian: Ростислав Владимирович Захаров; September 7, 1907 – January 15, 1984) was a Soviet and Russian choreographer, ballet dancer and opera director. He was a professor at the Russian Institute of Theatre Arts (GITIS) in Moscow (1946–1983). Rostislav Zakharov was awarded the Stalin Prize twice and designated the People's Artist of the USSR (1969). Fyodor Zakharovich Zakharov (; ; September 5, 1919 – September 29, 1994) was a Soviet and Ukrainian painter. He was awarded the title People's Painter of Ukrainian SSR in 1978, and the Shevchenko National Prize in 1987, the highest Ukrainian award for art and literature. Life Zakharov was born on September 5, 1919 in Aleksandrovskoye rural settlement, a little village in the Smolensk Governorate of the Russian Empire (today part of Monastyrshchinsky District, Smolensk Oblast). He descended from a farming family. In 1935 he received a grant to study at the Kalinin Academy of Art in Moscow, where he finished his studies with distinction in 1941. Mikhail Nikolayevich Zakharov () (5 November 1912 – 19 February 1978) was an officer of the Soviet Navy. He saw action in the Second World War and rose to the rank of admiral. Born in St Petersburg, in the Russian Empire in 1912, Zakharov began his naval career in 1930 with service with Coastal Defence Artillery Brigades, before moving into the political branch. He was military commissar at the Pacific Fleet's base at Nikolayevsk-on-Amur during the German invasion of the Soviet Union, and during the war served on the military councils of the Pacific Fleet, the Volga Military District and the Northern Fleet. He followed this with work as a propagandist and as a senior instructor, and later as inspector of the fleet's political administration. Georgiy Fedorovich Zakharov (23 April 1897 – 26 January 1957) () was a Soviet general officer, mainly notable for his service in World War II. Early life Zakharov was born on April 23, 1897 in the village of Shilov, Russia (now in the Saratov region), and began military service in 1915. Early career Zakharov participated in the First World War with the rank of second lieutenant, having completed training at a school for ensigns in 1916. In October 1917, he was elected a regimental commander. During the Russian Civil War, from August 1919 he became a company commander in the Red Army, and was in combat on the Eastern Front. Stella Zakharova (born 12 July 1963 in Odessa, Ukraine) is a retired gymnast who competed internationally for the former Soviet Union between 1977 and 1982. She was an Olympic and World Championship gold medalist in team competitions, and won individual all-around titles at other events. Zakharova won her first all-around championship at the 1976 All-Union School Spartakiade. That same year she placed second overall in the Junior USSR Championships. She was a consistently strong competitor through 1977-78, winning several vaulting and floor exercise event titles. A powerful tumbler, Zakharova was the first woman to incorporate three double-back somersaults into her floor routine.
