Zagreb Film
Zagreb Film is a Croatian film company principally known for its animation studio. From Zagreb, it was founded in 1953. They have produced hundreds of animated films, as well as documentaries, television commercials, educational films and several feature films. Zagreb Film produced the cartoon series ''Professor Balthazar'' ( hr, Profesor Baltazar), created by Zlatko Grgić, about an amusing professor who solved various imaginative problems. Another popular cartoon of theirs was '' Inspector Mask'' (). History Zagreb Film was founded in 1953 with the main profile of an animated films production company. Since then, more than 600 animated films, 14 feature films, about 600 documentaries and 800 commercials as well as 600 educational films were produced in this studio. Inspektor Maska
(English: ''Inspector Mask'') was a Croatian and Yugoslav animation, animated comedy television series produced for television by Zagreb Film that ran from 1962 to 1963. Development The idea for the series originated from the 1959 animated short Inspektor se vratio kući, directed by Vatroslav Mimica, which was particularly well received. Synopsis The story takes place in an unnamed American metropolis of the 1960s, where a criminal gang led by ''Prehlađeni Joe'' (Runny Nose Joe) carries out various criminal acts, but is thwarted by police inspektor Maska, using various disguises to track them and catch them in the end. Zagreb ( , , , ) is the capital (political), capital and List of cities and towns in Croatia#List of cities and towns, largest city of Croatia. Georges Sadoul
Georges Sadoul (4 February 1904 – 13 October 1967) was a French film critic, journalist and cinema writer. He is known for writing encyclopedias of film and filmmakers, many of which have been translated into English. Biography Sadoul was born in Nancy. He was trained at the Sorbonne and the IDHEC, a French cinema school. His father, Charles Sadoul, was a well-known ethnologist. At the age of 19, a student in Nancy, he collaborated with ''L'Est Républicain'' and founded the Nancy-Paris Committee. The objective of this committee is to allow the population of Nancy to meet Parisian productions and artists. He notably brought there Jean Epstein, Henry Prunières, André Lurçat, Jacques Rivière, Jacques Copeau and André Lhote. Once a surrealist, he became a member of the French Communist Party in 1932. ''Tup Tup'' is a 1972 Yugoslav animated short by Nedeljko Dragić at Zagreb Film animation studio, in cooperation with Corona Cinematografica in Italy. Plot A man is trying to go to sleep but a noise keeps him up. In the process of trying to stop the noise, he exposes a bizarre mixture of sounds and images. Accolades It was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film, but lost to Richard Williams' take on ''A Christmas Carol''. Don Kihot (1961 Short)
Don Kihot is a 1961 experimental animated short by Vlado Kristl for Zagreb Film. It is loosely based on Don Quixote by Miguel de Cervantes. Themes and reception The author reduced the characters in the short to Klee-style ideograms, with backgrounds being represented by abstract frescoes, all of which is accompanied by atonal music. The short was blacklisted during the former Yugoslavia due to its rigid classification of art and society, which Don Kihot challenged. The short won a number of prizes at international festivals, such as the main prize at International Short Film Festival Oberhausen in 1962. It is described as a "difficult but very poetic film" and a magnum opus for Kristl. Speed and Wilsom state that the short "presents the eccentric individualist assailed by all the forces of the modern state - guns, radar, tanks, planes, patrols, armies - and in some amazing way the nonconformist deviationist Don triumphs over them all".
