Zwevegem () is a municipality located in the Belgian province of West Flanders. The municipality comprises the towns of Heestert, Moen, Otegem, Sint-Denijs and Zwevegem. On January 1, 2019, Zwevegem had a total population of 24,648. The total area is 63.24 km2 which gives a population density of 380 inhabitants per km2. The Bekaert company was founded in Zwevegem by Baron Leon Leander Bekaert. Heestert Military Cemetery holds the graves of 127 Britons and 57 Germans, most of whom died on 21–25 October 1918 in the area during the First World War. Léon Bekaert
Léon Antoine Bekaert (Zwevegem, 9 December 1891 - Zwevegem, 19 December 1961) was a Belgian industrialist and politician. He was the son of Leo Leander Bekaert, who founded the family business in 1880. He expanded the family venture ''Tréfileries Léon Bekaert'' (1935), at Zwevegem (production of steel wire) into Bekaert, a global company. He was President of the League of Christian Employers (1934–1961) and President of the Belgian league of the metallurgical industry ( Fabrimetal) from 1946 up to 1952, after which he accepted the chairmanship of the Federation of Belgian Enterprises. From 1926 until his death, he was burgomaster of Zwevegem and of 1938 up to beginning 1961 he was regent of the National Bank of Belgium. Heestert Military Cemetery
Heestert Military Cemetery is a British military cemetery with casualties from the First World War, located in the Belgian village of Heestert in the Zwevegem municipality. The cemetery was designed by William Harrison Cowlishaw and is located between the Onze-Lieve-Vrouw Assumption Church and the village cemetery. It is maintained by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission. There are 184 graves and a Cross of Sacrifice. History Heestert was held by the Germans from the start of the war. It was only taken by the British at the end of October 1918; almost all of the graves are of those who died in the period 21-25 October 1918. The cemetery was built around February 1919 by local farmers. They brought the British and German victims from the battlefield and their farms here to bury them under instruction from the mayor . Christian Dumolin (born 1945, Kortrijk) of Sint-Denijs is a Belgian businessman, President and CEO of Koramic Investment Group, President and CEO of Koramic-Koceram and Vice-Chairman of Wienerberger Supervisory Board. After he graduated in economics, he started his career in the insurance business. He took over the management of Koramic Building Products in 1980 and subsequently was appointed Chairman and Managing Director of the company. Anzegem
Anzegem () is a municipality located in the Belgian province of West Flanders. The municipality comprises the towns of Anzegem proper, Gijzelbrechtegem, Ingooigem, Kaster, Tiegem and Vichte. On 1 January 2006 Anzegem had a total population of 14,609. The total area is 41.79 km² which gives a population density of 349 inhabitants per km². One of the most famous inhabitants of Anzegem was Stijn Streuvels, the Flemish writer who died in Ingooigem in 1969, aged 98.
