''Zulu Rock'' is the third album of French singer Lizzy Mercier Descloux, which was released on ZE Records in 1984 and recorded at the Satbel Studio, Johannesburg, South Africa. Its sound was inspired by African folk music mixed with 80's French pop. An alternate version of the album was entitled "Mais où Sont Passées les Gazelles" ("But Where Have The Gazelles Gone?"; "Mais où Sont Passées les Gazelles" is also the title of the third track off of the album, released as a single in 1984). Reception After "Mais où Sont Passées les Gazelles" became a hit single in France, Mercier Descloux' music received some public attention. Martine-Elisabeth "Lizzy" Mercier Descloux (16 December 1956 – 20 April 2004) was a French musician, singer-songwriter, composer, actress, writer and painter. Early life Mercier Descloux grew up in Lyon, France, but returned to her native Paris in her teens to attend art school. With her partner Michel Esteban, she helped establish the store Harry Cover, temple of the punk movement in France, and the new wave magazine ''Rock News''. She struck up friendships with Patti Smith and Richard Hell when visiting New York in 1975, and both contributed material to her first book, ''Desiderata''. She and Esteban moved to New York in 1977, meeting Michael Zilkha, with whom Esteban formed ZE Records. Musical career With guitarist D.J. ZE Records was originally a New York-based record label, started in 1978 in music, 1978 by Michael Zilkha and Michel Esteban. It was reestablished by Esteban in 2003. History Michael Zilkha (b. 1954) is a British-born Oxford University, Oxford graduate of Iraqi descent, the son of Selim Zilkha, former owner of Mothercare, a major UK retail company, and the stepson of Cabinet of the United Kingdom, Cabinet member Harold Lever, Baron Lever of Manchester, Lord Lever. In the mid-1970s, Zilkha worked in the New York publishing industry and was a contributor to the ''Village Voice''. Adam Kidron is a British-born ex-music producer, serial entrepreneur, and the ex-Chief Executive Officer of Urban Box Office (UBO), a reggaeton and urban Latino record label, and Yonder Music. Record producer Adam Kidron began his career in the record industry in 1978, He worked in record production for the label Rough Trade Records, as well as Stiff Records, where he worked with artists including Davey Payne and The Blockheads. Michel Esteban
Michel Antoine Gaston Esteban (born 7 May 1951) is a French record producer, record company executive, cultural center director and former magazine editor, who founded the Paris shop Harry Cover in 1973, was influential in the early development of punk rock, and, together with Michael Zilkha, established the New York-based record label ZE Records in 1978. Life and career Esteban was born in Paris. From 1968, he studied graphic arts at L'École d'Arts Graphiques in the city, and in 1973 founded a shop in the Rue des Halles, Harry Cover, which specialised in rock merchandise, magazines and books as well as imported records from the US and UK. ''Mambo Nassau'' is the second studio album by French singer Lizzy Mercier Descloux. It was released on ZE Records in 1981 and recorded at the Compass Point Studios in Nassau, Bahamas. David Snell (musician)
David Snell (born 12 May, 1936) is a British harpist, composer and conductor who has worked across a wide range of genres, from jazz, pop and soundtracks through to library music and classical concert works. Snell was born in Grantham, Lincolnshire and took his first piano lessons there from local teacher Frank Rawle. He played as a pianist with the local Jimmy Carr Orchestra before leaving Grantham for National Service in 1954 with the Royal Artillery Band. He then studied harp with Marie Goossens. He began his professional career as a harpist with the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra and later joined the orchestra of the Royal Opera House, while also performing as a freelance harpist for various orchestras and as a session musician.
