Zouzou (film)
''Zouzou'' is a French film by Marc Allégret released in 1934. Josephine Baker, who plays the title character, was the first black woman to play the leading role in a major motion picture. It was shot at the Joinville Studios in Paris, with sets designed by the art directors Lazare Meerson and Alexandre Trauner. Plot Zouzou and Jean are presented in the Cirque Romarin, a traveling circus, as 10-year-old twins: she's dark, he's light. Père Melé (Mama and papa, Papa) adopted them after their fathers—both performers in the circus—died. Cut to Manila. Jean has become a sailor, with at least one girl in every port. He writes to Zouzou, who lives in Toulon with Papa Melé, now that the circus has failed. The fleet returns. and Jean, confined to quarters for a week, jumps ship in the middle of the night. Marc Allégret (22 December 1900 – 3 November 1973) was a French screenwriter, photographer and film director. Alexandre Trauner (born Sándor Trau; 3 August 1906 in Budapest, Kingdom of Hungary, Hungary – 5 December 1993 in Omonville-la-Petite, France) was a Hungarian film production designer. After studying painting at Hungarian University of Fine Arts, Hungarian Royal Drawing School, he left the country in 1929, fleeing from the antisemitic government of Miklós Horthy, Admiral Horthy. In Paris, he became the assistant of set designer Lazare Meerson, at the studios in Épinay-sur-Seine working on such films as ''À nous la liberté'' (1932) and ''La Kermesse héroïque'' (1935). Viviane Romance (born Pauline Ronacher Ortmanns; 4 July 1912 – 25 September 1991) was a French actress. Viviane Romance was born in Roubaix, France. She began her career as a dancer at the Moulin Rouge in Paris and was elected Miss Paris of 1930 before she made her film debut in 1931 with a cameo role in ''La Chienne.'' Romance caused a small scandal winning Miss Paris because she had a child. She appeared in several films over the next few years before making a strong impression in ''La belle équipe'' (1936). Yvette Lebon (14 August 1910 – 28 July 2014) was a French actress. Biography Lebon studied music and art before going into acting. During World War II, she was the mistress of Jean Luchaire, a French journalist and press baron executed after the war for collaboration with France's German occupiers.
