Zorbas
"Zorba's Dance" ( el, Ο Χορός Του Ζορμπά) is an instrumental by Greek composer Mikis Theodorakis. The song featured for the dance, which has become known as sirtaki, in the 1964 film ''Zorba the Greek'', for which Theodorakis wrote the soundtrack, and became renowned around the world. It is now commonly played and danced to in Greek tavernas. The film's track has since been recorded as a standalone song by many different musicians from around the world. Background The music of "Zorba's Dance" was composed by Mikis Theodorakis, who derived it from rebetiko, a form of urban music performed by Greek musicians with Turkish makam modes. ''Zorba the Greek'' ( el, Αλέξης Ζορμπάς, ''Alexis Zorbas'') is a 1964 comedy-drama film written, produced, edited, and directed by Greek Cypriot filmmaker Michael Cacoyannis. It stars Anthony Quinn as the titular character, an earthy and boisterous peasant in Crete, and Alan Bates as the buttoned-up young intellectual he befriends. The cast also includes Lila Kedrova, Irene Papas, and Sotiris Moustakas. The musical score was composed by Mikis Theodorakis. Sirtaki
Sirtaki or syrtaki ( el, συρτάκι) is a dance of Greek origin, choreographed for the 1964 film ''Zorba the Greek''. It is a recent Greek folkdance, and a mixture of "syrtos" and the slow and fast rhythms of the hasapiko dance. The dance and the accompanying music by Mikis Theodorakis are also called Zorba's dance, the Zorba or "the dance of Zorba". The dance has become popular in Greece and one that is identified with the Greeks. The name ''sirtaki'' comes from the Greek word syrtos – from σύρω (τον χορό), which means "drag (the dance)" or "lead (the dance)" – a common name for a group of traditional Greek dances of so-called "dragging" style, as opposed to pidikhtos (πηδηχτός), a hopping or leaping style. LCD (music Act)
LCD were a computer generated dance act, active in the late 1990s. Signed to Virgin Records, their only hit single was a Europop version of the Greek song "Zorba's Dance". The music video to the song, made in computerised animation, featured a band of overweight men playing the song. The single was a club hit in the UK, charting twice in the top 40 of the UK Singles Chart, within 18 months of its original release, and was one of the first of its kind which was enabled to be played on a computer for its music video. The Dutch Top 40 ( nl, Nederlandse Top 40) is a weekly music chart compiled by ''Stichting Nederlandse Top 40''. It started as a radio program titled "Veronica Top 40", on the offshore station Radio Veronica in 1965. It remained "The Veronica Top 40" until 1974, when the station was forced to stop broadcasting. Joost den Draaijer initiated the Top 40 in the Netherlands. The show currently airs on Fridays from 2 to 6 PM on Qmusic. Michail "Mikis" Theodorakis ( el, Μιχαήλ "Μίκης" Θεοδωράκης ; 29 July 1925 – 2 September 2021) was a Greek composer and lyricist credited with over 1,000 works. A brass instrument is a musical instrument that produces sound by sympathetic vibration of air in a tubular resonator in sympathy with the vibration of the player's lips. Brass instruments are also called labrosones or labrophones, from Latin and Greek elements meaning 'lip' and 'sound'. Durium was an Italian record label, active from 1935 to 1989. Part of the catalogue and the brand were subsequently taken over by Ricordi, who used it for some reissues. Its initial trademark consisted of the writing Durium in block letters, surmounted by the stylisation of three trumpets and an eagle. Los Marcellos Ferial (in some recordings the name is credited as I Marcellos Ferial) are an Italian vocal group, mainly active in the sixties, consisting of Marcello Minerbi, Carlo Timò and Tullio Romano. The vocal trio was formed by the label Durium Records, Durium as a response to the music of Latin America and the Caribbean which was then in vogue in Italy; in particular, the trio was called to record a cover version of the Los Hermanos Rigual song "Cuando calienta el sol (song), Cuando calienta el sol" before the rival record company RCA Records, RCA could properly publish the original version in Italy. Their version reached the first place on the Italian Hit Parade, but provoked the reaction of RCA who subsequently sued Durium.
