Zonnebeke
Zonnebeke (; vls, Zunnebeke) is a municipality located in the Belgian province of West Flanders. The municipality comprises the villages of , , Passendale, Zandvoorde and Zonnebeke proper. On January 1, 2006, Zonnebeke had a total population of 11,758. The total area is 67.57 km2 which gives a population density of 174 inhabitants per km2. History The villages of Zonnebeke congregated around a large Augustinian abbey and its associated Benedictine convent in Nonnebosschen. Both were destroyed during the iconoclastic outbreak in 1580. Only the abbey was rebuilt, but was looted during the French occupation the abbey was confiscated. Passendale played a role in the Battle of Westrozebeke in 1382. Situated in the centre of the Ypres Salient, World War I destroyed the whole area. Left abandoned until the early 1920s, people slowly returned and rebuilt the villages. Memorial Museum Passchendaele 1917
The Memorial Museum Passchendaele 1917 in Zonnebeke is a Belgian museum devoted to the 1917 Battle of Passchendaele (also known as the Third Battle of Ypres) where in 1917 in only 100 days, almost 500,000 men were killed for only eight kilometres gain of ground. The museum is housed in the historic château grounds of Zonnebeke and focuses on the material aspects of World War I. History The history of the Memorial Museum Passchendaele (MMP1917) starts in 1987. For the first time in history, there was an exhibition about the Third Battle in Ypres (1917). This exhibition consisted of never shown visual materials from the Imperial War Museum. It was a great success, with 9,000 visitors, a large ceremony on Tyne Cot Cemetery, and battlefield tours. Zandvoorde ( vls, Zanvôorde) is a village in the Belgian province of West Flanders and a part (deelgemeente) of the municipality of Zonnebeke. Zandvoorde is a rural village, in the rolling landscape of the southern part of the province. History Old listings of the place date back to 1102, as ''Sanfort''. "Sant" refers to sand (in modern Dutch: ''zand''), "fort" refers to Ford (in modern Dutch: ''voorde''), a shallow crossing in a watercourse. The village was completely destroyed during World War I. Passendale cheese, named for Passendale, the village where it originated, is one of the best-known cheeses of Belgium. Regular Passendale cheese is produced in two versions, Classic and Prelude. There is also a premium version, Passendale Bel Age. Passendale Cheese resembles a loaf of bread, with a round shape, and a hard but edible brown rind with spots of white. Inside, the flesh is golden, dotted with small holes and very creamy. It has a firm and damp consistency, slightly sweet bouquet and mild flavor.
