Zone 74, Qatar
Zone 74 is a zone of the municipality of Al Khor in the state of Qatar. The main districts recorded in the 2015 population census were Simaisma, Al Jeryan, Al Khor City. Al Egda
Al Egda ( ar, العقدة; also spelled Al Oqda and Al Uqdah) is a district in Qatar located in the municipality of Al Khor. It is located on the outskirts of Al Khor City, the municipal seat, and is considered to be a district of the city. The hill Mashaf Al Egda is nearby to the south. Etymology The Arabic word "oqda" is roughly translated to "hold on to" in English. As the area is a rawda (depression), it would collect and retain vast amounts of water and sediments during rainy season, hence its name. Infrastructure Al Uqdah Equestrian Complex opened to the public in 2013. Strategically centered just outside Al Khor City, it is one of the most important equestrian facilities in the country. It accommodates no less than 1,000 horses, and its infrastructure includes a horse training area, indoor show halls and outdoor arenas. Ras Matbakh
Ras Matbakh ( ar, راس مطبخ, Ra’s al Maţbakh) is a settlement in Qatar located in the municipality of Al Khor. It consists of a cape extending into the Persian Gulf. Large concentrations of mangroves (''Avicennia marina'') are located off its coast. It is located to the northeast of Al Khor City and to the southeast of Al Thakhira. Etymology "Ras" in Arabic means "head", in this context it is being used to refer to a headland. On the other hand, "matbakh" is translated as "kitchen". This name was given because the area was used a massive fireplace in the past for cooking. History In the 1820s, George Barnes Brucks carried out the first British survey of the Persian Gulf. Al Khor Island
Al Khor Island ( ar, جزيرة الخور), also known as Jazirat bin Ghanim and Purple Island, is an island located in the municipality of Al Khor on the northeast coast of Qatar. It accommodates the only archaeological site in the country attributable to the second millennium BC. There are four main periods of occupation on the island, dating from as early as c. 2000 BC to as late as 1900 AD. The island is best known for being the site of operation of a Kassite-controlled purple dye industry in the second millennium BC. Al Khor Industrial Area
Al Khor Industrial Area ( ar, صناعية الخور; also known as Umm Qayn) is an industrial zone in Qatar located in the municipality of Al Khor. It is situated between Al Khor City, the municipal seat, and Al Thakhira. The government placed a moratorium on the area in 2005 but lifted it in 2017. History In 2005, the Ministry of Municipality and Urban Planning froze all building permits in the area, opting to create a new industrial area closer to Umm Birka and Simaisma instead. Over the following years, infrastructure in the Al Khor Industrial Area suffered; the buildings were in disrepair and debris lined the streets. Rent prices were drastically raised in both the Al Khor Industrial Area and its neighboring areas, and some companies based in the area had to suspend their projects. Al Heedan
Al Heedan ( ar, الحيضان; also spelled Al Hidan and Al Haydan) is a village in Qatar located in the municipality of Al Khor. It is situated on the outskirts of Al Khor City, the municipal seat, and is considered a district of the city. Parts of its territory fall under Al Daayen Municipality. Etymology Similar to most other place names in Qatar, Al Heedan derives its name from its geographic features. "Heedan" is Arabic for "water reservoir", being so named because its area consists of three adjacent rawdas (depressions) which retain water for long periods of time. History J.G. Lorimer's ''Gazetteer of the Persian Gulf'' (1908) has an entry for Al Heedan, referring to it as "Al Hadhan". He lists its location as 7 miles south-west of Khor Shaqiq and 6 miles east from the coast. Al Khor (city)
Al Khor ( ar, الخور) is a coastal city in northern Qatar, located 50 kilometres north of the capital, Doha. Considered one of Qatar's largest cities, it is the capital city of the municipality of Al Khor. The name of the city means creek in Arabic; it was given this name because the original settlement was built on a creek. Al Khor is home to many employees of the oil industry due to its proximity to Qatar's northern oil and natural gas fields and to Ras Laffan Industrial City. It was also the venue for the opening game of the 2022 FIFA World Cup. History Historically, Al Khor was ruled by the Al Muhannadi, a tribe which consists of several Bedouin families. Municipalities Of Qatar
Since 2015, Qatar has been divided into eight municipalities. In 2004, a new municipality, Al Daayen, was created under Resolution No. 13, formed from parts of Umm Salal and Al Khawr; at the same time, Al Ghuwariyah was merged with Al Khawr; Al Jumaliyah was merged with Ar Rayyan; Jarayan al Batnah was split between Al Rayyan and Al Wakrah; and Mesaieed was merged with Al Wakrah. Simaisma
Simaisma ( ar, سُمَيْسِمَة; also spelled Sumaysimah) is a small seaside town located on the eastern coast of Qatar 30 km north of the capital Doha. This town is characterized by old houses and mosques that are relics from the days before oil and natural gas were discovered in Qatar. It was demarcated in 1988. Small clusters of mangroves dot its coastline. Geographically, it is located in the municipality of Al Daayen, but administratively, it is a part of Al Khor. History J.G.
