Tropojë (; sq-definite, Tropoja) is a municipality in Kukës County, northeastern Albania, within the historical ethnographic region of the Gjakova Highlands. The municipality consists of the administrative units of Bajram Curri, Bujan, Bytyç, Fierzë, Lekbibaj, Llugaj, Margegaj and Tropojë, that became municipal units. The seat of the municipality is the town Bajram Curri. As of the Institute of Statistics estimate from the 2011 census, there were 4,117 people residing in the municipal unit Tropojë and 20,517 in Tropojë Municipality. Etymology Tropojë's old name was ''Trebopolje'' and is recorded in Serbian medieval charters and Ottoman registers. The word itself comes from the old Slavic ''trebiti'', ‘to clean’, and ''polje'', ‘field’, i.e. ‘clean field’. Tropojë used to be more commonly known as Malësia e Gjakoves. Kukës County
Kukës County (; sq, Qarku i Kukësit) is a landlocked county in northeastern Albania, with the capital in Kukës. The county spans and had a total population of 74,388 people as of 2021. The county borders on the counties of Dibër, Lezhë and Shkodër and the countries of Montenegro, Kosovo and North Macedonia. It is divided into three municipalities: Has, Kukës and Tropojë. Zogaj Mine
The Zogaj mine is a large mine located near the village Zogaj in northern Albania in Kukës County, north-east of the capital, Tirana. Zogaj represents one of the largest chromium reserve in Albania and one of the largest in Europe having estimated reserves of 1.238 million tonnes of ore grading between 24 and 28% chromium metal. The mine is part of the Tropojë Massif, a area which has a rock thickness between and and contains 286 verified chromium deposits and occurrences. The deposit has been explored to depths of up to and the geological reserves amount to 6.1 million tonnes grading 26.48% chromium metal. The Zogaj mine began operating in 1980. Bytyqi
Bytyçi () or Bytyqi, Bityçi and Bitiçi refers to an Albanian tribe or ''fis'' centred in the southeastern Highlands of Gjakova. The surname derived from the tribe is found throughout Albania and Kosovo. Geography The Bytyçi tribe are situated in the southeastern parts of the Highlands of Gjakova, an ethnographic region in north-east Albania and western Kosovo. Bytyçi tribal territory borders Gashi in the northwest over the Luzha Pass ( sq, Qafa e Luzhës), Krasniqi in the west and Hasi in the south. The Highlands of Gjakova or Gjakova Highlands ( sq, Malësia e Gjakovës) refers to the mountainous ethnographic region in the eastern Albanian Alps that sits between north-eastern Albania and western Kosovo, serving as the historical centres of the Albanian Gashi, Krasniqi, Bytyqi, Morina, Nikaj and Mërturi tribes.
