Zinaida Mareseva
Zinaida Ivanovna Mareseva (; 20 June 1923 – 6 August 1943) was a Senior Sergeant in the 214th Guards Rifle Regiment of the 73rd Guards Rifle Division during World War II. For her actions in battle she was posthumously awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union on 22 February 1944. Civilian life Mareseva was born on 20 June 1923 to a Russian family in Cherkaskoe village, located within present-day Volsky District, Volsky district of the Saratov Oblast; her father was a shepherd on a Collective farming, collective farm. After graduating from secondary school she attended medical courses until being transferred to work at a cement plant due to the start of the war. Kseniya Semyonovna Konstantinova (; 18 April 1925 – 1 October 1943) was a medic in the Red Army during World War II who was posthumously awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union on 4 June 1944. Civilian life Konstantinova was born on 18 April 1925 to a Russian family in the village of Lubny. In 1937 she and her two younger brothers witnessed the NKVD arrest their father, Semyon Grigorievich, a primary school teacher, on charges under article 58 after a false accusation from colleagues. With their father sentenced to five years in prison as an enemy of the people, Kseniya and her siblings were considered children of an enemy of the people, a status that she long sought to rid herself of, knowing that her father was not guilty. Valeriya Osipovna Gnarovskaya (; 18 October 1923 – 23 September 1943) was a medic in the 907th Rifle Regiment who fought on the Stalingrad Front in World War II. On 23 September 1943, when a German tank broke through the Soviet line of defence where she was treating wounded soldiers, she threw herself under the tank with a bag of grenades, killing herself but repulsing the German counterattack. She was posthumously awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union on 3 June 1944. The Seversky Donets () or Siverskyi Donets (), usually simply called the Donets, is a river on the south of the East European Plain. It originates in the Central Russian Upland, north of Belgorod, flows south-east through Ukraine (Kharkiv, Donetsk and Luhansk Oblasts) and then again through Russia ( Rostov Oblast) to join the river Don, about from the Sea of Azov. The Battle of Kursk was a major World War II Eastern Front engagement between the forces of Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union near Kursk in the southwestern USSR during late summer 1943; it ultimately became the largest tank battle in history. The battle began with the launch of the German offensive Operation Citadel (german: Unternehmen Zitadelle), on 5 July, which had the objective of pinching off the Kursk salient with attacks on the base of the salient from north and south simultaneously.
