Zhao Yan (Three Kingdoms)
Zhao Yan (171 – July or August 245), courtesy name Boran, was a government official and military general of the state of Cao Wei during the Three Kingdoms period of China. He previously served under the warlord Cao Cao during the late Eastern Han dynasty. Early life Zhao Yan was from Yangzhai County (), Yingchuan Commandery (), which is present-day Yuzhou, Henan. When chaos broke out in central China towards the end of the Eastern Han dynasty, Zhao Yan fled south to Jing Province (covering present-day Hubei and Hunan), where he met Du Xi and Po Qin (). The three of them became close friends, pooled their wealth together, and helped each other out financially. Zhao Yan shared equal fame as Xin Pi, Chen Qun and Du Xi, who like him were also from Yingchuan Commandery. They were collectively referred to as "Xin, Chen, Du and Zhao". Zhao Yan () (died 923), né Zhao Lin (), was an official of the Chinese Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms period state Later Liang. As a son-in-law of its founding emperor Zhu Wen and as someone instrumental in the succession of its last emperor Zhu Zhen (Zhu Youzhen), he was influential during Zhu Zhen's reign and was traditionally blamed for corruption and misleading the emperor into making critical mistakes that caused Later Liang's fall at the hands of its rival Later Tang. Zhao Yan (, born 14 March 1962) is a Chinese researcher employed by the Beijing bureau of ''The New York Times''. He was imprisoned for a three-year period starting 17 September 2004, on charges of fraud, after originally being arrested for revealing state secrets. According to the BBC, he was released on 15 September 2007. The accusation that he disclosed state secrets is related to an article in ''The NY Times'' on 7 September 2004, that correctly predicted the retirement of Jiang Zemin, former General Secretary of the Communist Party of China and paramount leader. Jiang retired on 19 September of that year. ''The NY Times'' had said that Zhao did not provide that information. On 17 June 2006, Zhao was tried in a closed-door session in Beijing.
