Zhang Wei (author)
Zhang Wei (; born 7 November 1956) is a Chinese author. He was born in Longkou, Yantai, which is located in the north of the Shandong Peninsula. He graduated from the Chinese Department at Yantai Normal College in 1980. Three years later, he became a member of China Writers Association, an organization for which he has served as chairman and deputy chairman of the Shandong branch. He is best known for his novels ''The Ancient Ship'' and '' September's Fable''. In 2011 Zhang won the Mao Dun Literature Prize, the highest national literary award, for ''On the Plateau'', a 10-volume work that took a decade to write. Mao Dun Literature Prize () is a prize for novels, established in the will of prominent Chinese writer Mao Dun (for which he personally donated 250,000 RMB) and sponsored by the China Writers Association. Awarded every four years, it is one of the most prestigious literature prizes in China. It was first awarded in 1982. Selection rules According to selection rule, any work, authored by Chinese nationals, published in mainland China, and with over 130,000 characters, is eligible. The selection committee in the Chinese Writers Association holds the voting poll twice, and the winner must receive over 2/3 of the votes cast. The process is highly selective and each time, the number of winners is between three and five. The prize is awarded every four years, though it was originally awarded every three years. The Ancient Ship
''The Ancient Ship'' () is a Chinese novel by Zhang Wei (author), Zhang Wei, first published in 1987. The novel spans four decades of Chinese history beginning with the creation of the People's Republic of China, People's Republic in 1949, then difficult periods of land reform, as well as famine, the Cultural Revolution and the Great Leap Forward. It is the story of three generations, the Sui (surname), Sui, Zhao (surname), Zhao and Li (surname), Li families who live through these difficult times. The novel is set in the fictional northern town of Wali which once had a thriving river and docks, but whose river shrank to the point of being unnavigable. The title refers to an ancient ship that is discovered buried in the floodplain adjacent to the city. An English translation by Howard Goldblatt was published by HarperCollins in 2008. China Writers Association
China Writers Association or Chinese Writers Association (CWA, ) is a subordinate people's organization of the China Federation of Literary and Art Circles (CFLAC). Founded in July 1949, the organization was initially named the China National Literature Workers Association. In September 1953, it was renamed the China Writers Association. The association's leadership was purged shortly after the 1989 Tiananmen Square protests and massacre. In April 2012, the organization changed its translated name to China Writers Association. It now has more than 9,000 registered members, with branch associations across the nation. The first CWA Chair was Mao Dun, under the leadership of the then CFLAC Chairman Guo Moruo. In 1985, Mao Dun was succeeded by Ba Jin. The incumbent Chair is Tie Ning since 2006.
