Mary Annella Zervas (7 April 1900 – 14 August 1926) was a Benedictine nun who died after a three-year battle with the skin disease Pityriasis rubra pilaris. Prior to the 1960s, Sister Annella's grave in St. Joseph, Minnesota was considered a place of pilgrimage. Early life Anna Cordelia Zervas was born in Moorhead, Minnesota on 7 April 1900. Her father, Hubert Zervas, an immigrant from the village of Immekeppel, in the German Empire, was a butcher and ran a local meat market. Her mother, Emma (née Levitre) Zervas, was born in Saint-Theodore-d'Acton, Quebec. Zervas was raised in a large family which attended St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church in Moorhead, where her father was the choir director and a member of the Knights of Columbus. At the time, the parochial school from St. Mary's was looked after by priests and nuns of the Benedictine Order. Konstantinos Zervas ( el, Κωνσταντίνος Ζέρβας; born 1964) is the 61st and current mayor of Thessaloniki, the second-largest city in Greece. Konstantinos Zervas was born in Thessaloniki in 1964. He is the son of Vasilis Zervas—a civil engineer—and Lilika Zerva-Ologa—a philologist. He has two older sisters. Zervas attended the German School of Thessaloniki and the Experimental School of Thessaloniki. Leonidas Zervas
Leonidas Zervas ( el, Λεωνίδας Ζέρβας, ; 21 May 1902 – 10 July 1980) was a Greek organic chemist who made seminal contributions in peptide chemical synthesis. Together with his mentor Max Bergmann they laid the foundations for the field in 1932 with their major discovery, the Bergmann-Zervas carboxybenzoxy oligopeptide synthesis which remained unsurpassed in utility for the next two decades. The carboxybenzyl protecting group he discovered is often abbreviated Z in his honour. Throughout his life Zervas also served in many important posts, including President of the Academy of Athens or briefly Minister of Industry of Greece. He received numerous awards and honours during his life and posthumously, such as Foreign Member of the USSR Academy of Sciences or the first Max Bergmann golden medal. Napoleon Zervas ( el, Ναπολέων Ζέρβας; May 17, 1891 – December 10, 1957) was a Hellenic Army officer and resistance leader during World War II. He organized and led the National Republican Greek League (EDES), the second most significant (after EAM), in terms of size and activity, resistance organization against the Axis Occupation of Greece. Early life and army career Zervas was born in Arta, Epirus, but his ancestors came from the Greek village of Souli. After finishing high school in 1910, he volunteered for the 2nd Infantry Division. During the Balkan Wars, he was promoted to the rank of first sergeant. Later he attended the Hellenic Army NCO School and graduated as sergeant major in 1914. Nikolaos Zervas ( el, Νικόλαος Ζέρβας, 1800–1869) was a Greek revolutionary and Souliote captain in the Greek War of Independence. After the establishment of Greek independence he reached the rank of general in the Hellenic Army. Zervas was born in Souli, Epirus, then Ottoman Empire, and became one of the leaders of the Souliotes. Zervas participated in the Greek War of Independence (1821–1830) and distinguished at the Battle of Phaleron (April 1827). At March 1828, together with another revolutionary leader, Dimos Tselios, managed to push back an advancing Ottoman (Turkish-Albanian) force at Menidi, Attica. After Independence, Zervas participated in an anti-monarchist revolt in Acarnania (1836). At 1854, already a Major General in the Hellenic Army, he resigned his post and joined General Theodoros Grivas in the Epirus revolt of 1854.
