Zema Williams
Zema Williams (July 7, 1941 – July 19, 2016), better known as Chief Zee, was a well-known fan and unofficial mascot of the franchise then-known as the Washington Redskins (since renamed Washington Commanders) of the National Football League. Dressed in a faux Native American war bonnet, rimmed glasses, and red jacket, Chief Zee began attending Redskins games in 1978. History Born in Colquitt, Georgia on July 7, 1941, Williams worked as a sharecropper and picked cotton as a youth. He later drove a truck, when he got a draft notice in 1960. Two years later, he completed his military service at Fort Riley, and returned to driving trucks. By 1968, he was a car salesman in Washington, D.C. Colquitt, Georgia
Colquitt is a city in Miller County, in the southwestern portion of the U.S. state of Georgia. The population was 1,992 at the 2010 census. Colquitt is the county seat of Miller County, a role it has held since just after Miller County was created by the Georgia Legislature in 1856. Veterans Stadium
Veterans Stadium was a multi-purpose stadium in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States, at the northeast corner of Broad Street and Pattison Avenue, part of the South Philadelphia Sports Complex. The seating capacities were 65,358 for football, and 56,371 for baseball. It hosted the Philadelphia Phillies of Major League Baseball (MLB) from 1971 to 2003 and the Philadelphia Eagles of the National Football League (NFL) from 1971 to 2002. The 1976 and 1996 Major League Baseball All-Star Games were held at the venue. It also hosted the annual Army-Navy football game between 1980 and 2001. In addition to professional baseball and football, the stadium hosted other amateur and professional sports, large entertainment events, and other civic affairs. License Plate Guy
Joe Ruback, better known as License Plate Guy (born June 7, 1969), is a fan of the New York Giants, best known for the license plates he wears at each game and his presence at most Giants games in general. Ruback went to all 283 games (272 regular season and eleven playoff games) the team played at Giants Stadium. He has attended every Giants home and away game since 2000, except during the 2020 NFL season in which fans were not permitted to attend due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Ruback first wore a plate to a game when he was 16, but the tradition of license plates did not become what it is now until the last decade. Hogettes
The Hogettes were a group of fans of the Washington Redskins (the franchise is now known as the Washington Commanders) who wore women's dresses, garden party hats, and pig snouts. The group was founded in 1983 by Michael Torbert and became a regular fixture at Redskins games for nearly 30 years. When the group announced its retirement following the 2012 season, it had over 20 members, including three who have been featured in an exhibit at the Pro Football Hall of Fame. The group retains a high profile largely because of their outrageous costumes, but also because of their frequent work for charitable organizations. The Hogettes have appeared in a national advertising campaign for Visa, and they provide support for many charities, including Children's Miracle Network, Ronald McDonald House, and March of Dimes. Edwin M. Anzalone (born September 19, 1959), better known as Fireman Ed, is a well known fan of the New York Jets. One of the most well-known National Football League fans, he has risen to prominence by appearing on many local radio shows. He is known for leading the crowd in the team chant, "J-E-T-S, Jets!, Jets!, Jets!", which originally was led by two retired NYPD Jet fans – alternating from one end zone to the other end zone, in the upper deck only. An actual New York City firefighter, Fireman Ed was injured on the job in 2007. During the butt fumble game, a rout of the Jets by the New England Patriots on Thanksgiving night 2012, Anzalone left the game before halftime, stating that he would no longer lead cheers at Jet games as Fireman Ed. Crazy Ray
Wilford Jones (January 22, 1931 – March 17, 2007), better known as Crazy Ray, was the unofficial mascot of the Dallas Cowboys. By some accounts, he was also the team's original mascot, who attended almost every home game since the team's inception. History He started selling pennants at games in 1962 and quickly endeared himself to the Cowboys fans with his western outfits, magic tricks, trademark whistle, and galloping along with a hobby horse. He was never officially employed by the Cowboys, but was given a Special Parking Pass and All-access for home games. Barrel Man (Denver Broncos)
Barrel Man, real name Tim McKernan (September 5, 1940 – December 5, 2009), was a superfan of the Denver Broncos. In all types of weather for 30 years, he attended every home game at both Mile High Stadium and INVESCO Field at Mile High wearing nothing but an orange barrel that covered his torso and a cowboy hat and boots. His costume was reminiscent of rodeo clowns (or barrelmen) who serve as a distraction to animals in the rodeo arena in order to protect riders who have been thrown and of the stereotype of the miner who lost his stake and had nothing left to wear but a barrel.
