Zem Zem Springs
Zem Zem is an archaic place name in the Berryessa Valley in Napa County, California, United States; the name is derived from the Zamzam Well ( ar, بئر زمزم, translit=Biʾru Zamzam) in Mecca, Saudi Arabia. Originally applied to Zem Zem Springs, a sulphured spring, the springs eventually hosted a small resort, which in turn garnered a post office. Zem Zem, California was originally located in neighboring Lake County but a boundary change moved it into Napa. Nearby Zim Zim Creek and Zim Zim Falls, in the Knoxville Wildlife Area, are alternate-spelling derivatives of the original Zem Zem. The site was also a source of onyx marble, according to a California state geologist, who reported there were specimens from Zem Zem in the museum of the State Mining Bureau. Calcareous Sinter
Calcareous sinter is a freshwater calcium carbonate deposit, also known as calc-sinter. Deposits are characterised by low porosity and well-developed lamination, often forming crusts or sedimentary rock layers. Calcareous sinter should not be confused with siliceous sinter, which the term sinter more frequently refers to. It has been suggested that the term "sinter" should be restricted to siliceous spring deposits and be dropped for calcareous deposits entirely. Features Calcareous sinter is characterised by laminations of prismatic crystals growing perpendicular to the substrate; laminations are separated by thin layers of microcrystalline carbonate. Calcareous sinter is porous due to the calcareous crystals enclosing many small cavities. Macrophytes are absent, consequently porosity is very low. Tolenas Springs
Tolenas Springs is a group of natural carbonated-water soda springs in the hills of Solano County, California, United States. The springs emerge from a formation of travertine that has been intermittently quarried for building material. The springs are located on private property and are closed to the public. History The springs are located near the source of Soda Springs Creek "on the east and south slopes of the Vaca Mountains. Travertine and onyx have been deposited here upon the sandstone and shale of the Knoxville formation; carbonated saline water issues from and near these deposits. The principal orifice is about 1000 feet west of the main body of travertine, at a pit sunk in a small deposit of onyx." The Tolenas springs were used by the Patwin people and their Paleo-Indian predecessors; there are a number of bedrock mortars and rock cupules at the site that serve as evidence of their past presence. The Aetna Springs Resort is a historic resort located in Pope Valley in the north eastern part of Napa County, California, United States. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Etymology It was named after a nearby hot spring. The spring was so named by the owner of the Aetna Mines, John Lawley, when he discovered the spring in the 1880s. History Aetna springs was founded by Chancellor Hartson in 1877. In August 2020, Aetna Springs was evacuated due to the Hennessey Fire, which resulted in the burning of over in five counties, including in Aetna Springs.
