Zbigniew Bieńkowski
Zbigniew Bieńkowski (31 August 1913, in Warsaw — 23 February 1994) was a Polish poet, Literary criticism, literary critic, translation, translator and essayist. Biography Bieńkowski graduated in 1931 from the Gymnasium (school), Gymnasium XX Marian in Bielany near Warsaw. From 1932 to 1939 he studied at the University of Warsaw both Legal education, law at the Faculty of Law, as well as at the Faculty of Humanities. Bieńkowski received a one-year scholarship from the University of Paris, Sorbonne and moved to Paris in 1938. In 1939 he moved to Italy and then to Yugoslavia, where he was caught by the outbreak of World War II. He returned to Poland during the Nazi occupation. He fought as a soldier for the Armia Krajowa, and participated in the Warsaw Uprising. After the war he worked in the editorial department of the ''Rzeczpospolita (newspaper), Rzeczpospolita'' daily, then in the weekly ''Odrodzenie'' and monthly ''Twórczość''. Warsaw Uprising
The Warsaw Uprising ( pl, powstanie warszawskie; german: Warschauer Aufstand) was a major World War II operation by the Polish resistance movement in World War II, Polish underground resistance to liberate Warsaw from German occupation. It occurred in the summer of 1944, and it was led by the Polish resistance Home Army ( pl, Armia Krajowa). The uprising was timed to coincide with the retreat of the German forces from Poland ahead of the Soviet advance. While approaching the eastern suburbs of the city, the Red Army temporarily halted combat operations, enabling the Germans to regroup and defeat the Polish resistance and to Planned destruction of Warsaw, destroy the city in retaliation.
