Zaynê Akyol
Zaynê Akyol (born in 1987 in Turkey) is a Canadian filmmaker, producer and photographer. She predominantly focuses on documentary film and is known for her feature-length documentary film ''Gulîstan, Land of Roses '' (2016), which was supported by the National Film Board (NFB) and MitosFilm in Germany. Early life and education Zaynê Akyol was born in a village in Turkey during 1987 to Kurdish parents. The Peshmerga, Kurdish army would frequently visit her village and Akyol has described the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) as being "part of my environment from a very early age". When she was four years old Akyol and her family moved to Canada, where they lived in Montreal, Quebec. She went on to attend Cégep Montmorency in Montreal for her pre-university education, after which she attended the University of Montreal for her bachelor's degree. Gulîstan, Land Of Roses
''Gulîstan, Land of Roses'' (French title: ''Gulîstan, terre de roses'') is a 2016 feature-length documentary film about women guerillas in a Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) Free Women's Units, Free Women's Unit, in combat against the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, directed by the Kurdish Montreal filmmaker Zaynê Akyol. Shot in Iraqi Kurdistan, the film is co-produced Montreal's Périphéria Productions, Germany's Mehmet Aktaş, MitosFilm and the National Film Board of Canada. The film was conceived and named for a woman, Gulîstan, who had been a role model for the director in her adopted home in Montreal, until she left to fight with the PKK. Akyol went to Iraq in 2010 in an unsuccessful effort to find her and make a film about her. Unable to locate Gulîstan, she found women who knew her, and the focus of the documentary shifted to telling Gulîstan's story through their memories of her. The Peshmerga ( ku, پێشمەرگه, Pêşmerge, lit=those who face death) is the Kurdish military forces of the autonomous Kurdistan Region of Iraq. According to the Constitution of Iraq, the Peshmerga, along with their security subsidiaries, are responsible for the security of Kurdistan Region, due to the fact that the Iraqi Armed Forces are forbidden by Iraqi law to enter Iraqi Kurdistan.
