Zarza La Mayor
Zarza la Mayor is a municipality located in the Cáceres (province), province of Cáceres, Extremadura, Spain. According to the 2006 census (Instituto Nacional de Estadística (Spain), INE), the municipality has a population of 1488 inhabitants. This is the most occidental municipality in "Las Vegas de Alagón" region. It is the only municipality in the region that borders with Portugal. Geography It is located 4 km in a straight line to :es:Salvaterra do Extremo, Salvaterra do Extremo. The EX-117 road from Moraleja to Alcántara, Alcantara pass through Zarza la Mayor. This municipality was especially important during Umayyad conquest of Hispania, Iberic Peninsula Moorish invasion. It can be seen today due to the strongholds present like :es:Castillo de Peñafiel (Zarza la Mayor), Racha-Rachel (or Peñafiel, as it was called later by Christians) and :es:Castillo de Bernardo, Bernardo Castle (Castillo de Bernardo).
