Gudrun Zapf-von Hesse
Gudrun Zapf-von Hesse (2 January 1918 – 13 December 2019) was a German book-binder, calligrapher and typographer. She also designed several typefaces. She was the 1991 winner of the Frederic W. Goudy Award. To mark her hundredth birthday in January 2018, Monotype released the titling typeface Hesse-Antiqua. Early life and education Gudrun von Hesse was born on 2 January 1918 in Schwerin, Mecklenburg-Schwerin (then part of German Empire). She became an apprentice and assistant at the bookbindery of Otto Dorfner in Weimar from 1934 to 1937. Her calligraphy practice began during this apprenticeship; in her acceptance address for the Frederic W. Goudy Award, she said "One afternoon a week we had to write very simple letters. Helmut Zapf
Helmut Zapf (born 4 March 1956) is a German composer. Life Born in , Thüringen, Zapf studied church music from 1974 until 1979 at the Kirchenmusikschulen Eisenach (Thüringen) and the Evangelische Hochschule für Kirchenmusik Halle. During this time Zapf took part in the Summer Courses for Neue Musik in Gera (Thuringia). After graduating, he worked as Kantor at the city church in Eisenberg (Thuringia) from 1979 to 1982. Until the beginning of his with Georg Katzer at the Akademie der Künste der DDR in Berlin (1982–1986), he wrote his first self-taught compositions, among others ''Singender Mann'' for solo flute, ''Brechungen I und II'' for flute and string trio, ''Klangetüde II'' for orchestra, ''Recitativ'' for oboe and string quartet. Hermann Zapf
Hermann Zapf (; 8 November 1918 – 4 June 2015) was a German type designer and calligrapher who lived in Darmstadt, Germany. He was married to the calligrapher and typeface designer Gudrun Zapf-von Hesse. Typefaces he designed include Palatino, Optima, and Zapfino. He is considered one of the greatest type designers of all time. Early life Zapf was born in Nuremberg during turbulent times marked by the German Revolution of 1918–1919 in Munich and Berlin, the end of World War I, the exile of Kaiser Wilhelm, and the establishment of Bavaria as a free state by Kurt Eisner. In addition, the Spanish flu pandemic took hold in Europe in 1918 and 1919. Two of Zapf's siblings died of the disease. Famine later struck Germany, and Zapf's mother was grateful to send him to school in 1925, where he received daily meals in a program organized by Herbert Hoover. Manfred Zapf
Manfred Zapf (born 24 August 1946 in Stapelburg) is a German former footballer, later a coach. A defender, Zapf spent his entire senior career with 1. FC Magdeburg, and captained the club to its greatest successes – three DDR championships, four cups, and the Cup Winners' Cup of 1974. In his time with the club he appeared in 327 league matches in the DDR-Oberliga and played 30 matches in the second-tier DDR-Liga. Uta Zapf (born 14 August 1941 in Liegnitz, Province of Lower Silesia) is a German politician and member of the Bundestag (SPD). Since 1998, she has been the chairperson of the subcommittee for "Disarmament, Arms Control, and Nonproliferation" of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the German Bundestag. Vivien Zapf is an American research scientist at the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory pulsed field facility at Los Alamos National Laboratory. Biography Zapf received her bachelor's degree in physics with computer science from Harvey Mudd College in 1997 and a Ph.D. in physics from the University of California, San Diego in 2003. Zapf studies Multiferrics and Quantum Magnetism. She served as a Millikan post-doctoral fellow at the California Institute of Technology from 2004-2005 and as a Director's fellow at Los Alamos National Laboratory from 2005-2006. Wolfgang Zapf (* Frankfurt am Main 25 April 1937; † Berlin 26 April 2018) was a German sociologist. Education Zapf visited basic school and secondary school emphasizing modern languages in Frankfurt am Main. He obtained his final examination in 1957.
