Zan Abeyratne
Suzanne Marguerite Abeyratne (born 1961), who performs as Zan or Xan, is an Australian-based singer born in London. Abeyratne was a co-lead vocalist of I'm Talking (1984–87), alongside Kate Ceberano. She provided lead vocals on their single, "Holy Word" (July 1986), which peaked at No. 9 in Australia, and No. 21 in New Zealand. Along with her identical twin sister Sherine (a member of Big Pig (1985–91)), Abeyratne has provided backing vocals for Models, INXS, and U2, and has toured the world with other bands. After the demise of I'm Talking, Abeyratne had a solo recording career. Her 1989 single, "It's Your Move", appeared in the top 100 on the ARIA Singles Chart. She acted, briefly, in season one of ''Round the Twist'' (1989), a children's TV comedy series. A mononym is a name composed of only one word. An individual who is known and addressed by a mononym is a mononymous person. In some cases, a mononym selected by an individual may have originally been from a polynym, a word which refers to one of many names for a person or an object. Australian Made was a festival concert series held during 1986–1987 in the six state capitals of Australia and featured local rock acts Mental as Anything, I'm Talking, The Triffids, The Saints, Divinyls, Models, INXS and even Jimmy Barnes. The series started in Hobart on 26 December 1986 and concluded in Sydney on 26 January 1987. Rock journalist Jeff Jenkins rated it as one of his 50 most significant events in Australian music history, "It wasn't a huge success, but it showed that an all-Australian festival could work." Australian Made was conceived to counter tours of international acts, like Dire Straits' 1985–1986 world tour, which were drying up funds for Australian groups. Bear Witness
''Bear Witness'' is the first and only studio album by Australian pop rock band I'm Talking. The line-up was Zan Abeyratne and Kate Ceberano on co-lead vocals, Stephen Charlesworth on keyboards, Ian Cox on saxophone, Robert Goodge on lead guitar, Barbara Hogarth on bass guitar and Cameron Newman on drums. It was released in August 1986 on Regular Records and reached No. 14 on the Kent Music Report albums chart. All eight tracks were co-written by Cox (lyrics) and Goodge (music). The album yielded three singles, " Do You Wanna Be?" (May), "Holy Word" (July) and "How Can It Be?" (October). At the 1986 ''Countdown'' Australian Music Awards ''Bear Witness'' was nominated for Best Debut Album. Essendon Airport (band)
Essendon Airport is an Australian electronic music, post-punk group formed in 1978 which explored experimental minimalist and funk music. Founding mainstays were the duo of David Chesworth on electric piano and drum machine and Robert Goodge on guitar. They were joined in late 1980 by Ian Cox on saxophone and Paul Fletcher on drums. In 1982 they added Barbara Hogarth on bass guitar but disbanded in the following year. The group issued a four-track extended play, ''Sonic Investigations (Of the Trivial)'' (May 1980), and a studio album, ''Palimpsest'' (May 1982). They reformed as the original duo line-up for occasional performances in 2003 after the issue of a compilation album, ''Sonic Investigations of the Trivial''. Oz For Africa
Oz for Africa was an Australian concert held on 13 July 1985 at the Sydney Entertainment Centre. It was organised by Bill Gordon who also organised the EAT Concert held at the Myer Music Bowl in Melbourne at the end of January 1985. That event was televised nationally on Channel Nine. Over $1million was raised in the accompanying telethon. Gordon organised for all proceeds to go to the Red Cross. During the 10 hour event live satellite hook ups between Melbourne London and Los Angeles included interviews with Geldof and many of the stars of the hit songs "We Are the World" & "Feed the World". The Oz for Africa concert was broadcast locally and internationally as part of the worldwide Live Aid performances to raise money for famine relief in Africa. "Lead the Way" is a song written and recorded by the Australian band I'm Talking. It was released in June 1985 and peaked at number 25 on the Australian Kent Music Report. According to the band's guitarist and composer, Robert Goodge production started "at Stalbridge Chambers, a dilapidated city building that seemed to house every groovy young artistic entrepreneur in town. Stephen Charlesworth and a gang of synthesiser wiz kids long had a studio there, and with Stephen operating the tape machines and synth sounds, it was a great place to try ideas." He goes onto state the song "gives a nod and a wink towards " Wanna Be Starting Something" but ends somewhere quite different. We had to have two attempts at recording it, starting at South Yarra’s Platinum but ending at Metropolis with the tried and true Ross Cockle at the desk." They enjoyed chart success with four top-20 hits on the Australian Kent Music Report Singles Chart, " Change in Mood" (1983), " Bitter Desire" (1984), " Something That You Said" and " Current Stand" (both 1985). The related album, '' Shine'' (20 May 1985), reached No. 9 on the Kent Music Report Albums Chart and was the 16th-biggest-selling album of 1985 in Australia.
