Sapphire
Sapphire is a precious gemstone, a variety of the mineral corundum, consisting of aluminium oxide () with trace amounts of elements such as iron, titanium, chromium, vanadium, or magnesium. The name sapphire is derived via the Latin "sapphirus" from the Greek "sappheiros", which referred to Lapis lazuli, lapis lazuli. It is typically blue, but natural "fancy" sapphires also occur in yellow, purple, orange, and green colors; "parti sapphires" show two or more colors. Mexican Woodnymph
The Mexican woodnymph (''Eupherusa ridgwayi'') is a species of hummingbird in the family Trochilidae endemic to western Mexico. It lives in subtropical or tropical moist lowland/foothill forest and plantations, feeding on flower nectar and insects. Mexican woodnymphs are vulnerable, threatened by habitat loss through deforestation. Taxonomy The Mexican woodnymph was formerly placed in the genus '' Thalurania'' that contains other species with "woodnymph" in their English names. A molecular phylogenetic study published in 2014 found that ''Thalurania'' was non-monophyletic and that the Mexican woodnymph is closely related to species in the genus '' Eupherusa''. Based on this result the Mexican woodnymph is now placed in ''Eupherusa''. The Mexican woodnymph is monotypic: there are no recognised subspecies. USS ''Zafiro'' was a collier, a bulk cargo ship, that served in the United States Navy from 1898 until 1904. ''Zafiro'' was constructed in 1884 in the United Kingdom by Hall, Russell & Company at Aberdeen, Scotland. Admiral George Dewey purchased her for the U.S. Navy at Hong Kong, China on 9 April 1898 just before his Asiatic Squadron sailed for the Philippine Islands at the beginning of the Spanish–American War. Though the ''Secretary of the Navy's Report'' for 1900 indicates that ''Zafiro'' was placed in commission on 10 April 1898, her role as a commissioned ship must have been unique indeed for her complement showed only one U.S. Navy man, her commanding officer, aboard. Zafiro Records was a major Spanish record label that issued records from the 1950s until the 1980s. In addition to issuing recordings by Spanish artists, the label issued many recordings by US and UK artists. Artists to have their recordings issued on the label include Juan Bau, Luisito Gasán, Malena Gracia, Buddy Guy, Los Brincos, Marisol, and Ornella Vanoni etc. Background The Zafiro label was established in 1952. According to the March 27, 1982 issue of ''Billboard'', the company was managed by Esteban Garcia Morencos. Under Morencos was Antonio Ortega, and international business was handled by Angel Prieto. Artists that established their careers with the label were, Maria Dolores Pradera, Los Brincos, Los Relampagos, Juan and Junior, Juan Pardo, Massiel and Juan Manuel Serrat. Los Zafiros (''The Sapphires'') were a Cuban close-harmony vocal group working from 1962 until 1976. The group was part of the filín (feeling) movement, inspired by American doo-wop groups such as The Platters.
