Yvonne Clarke
Yvonne Clarke is a Canadian politician who represents Porter Creek Centre on the Yukon Legislative Assembly from the Yukon Party since the 2021 general election. Prior to her election to the legislature, she was a businessperson and community volunteer in the Whitehorse area, including serving as president of the Canadian-Filipino Society of the Yukon and chair of the Yukon Advisory Council on Women's Issues. The Yukon Legislative Assembly (french: Assemblée législative du Yukon) is the legislative assembly for Yukon, Canada. Unique among Canada's Provinces and territories of Canada, three territories, the Yukon Legislative Assembly is the only territorial legislature which is organized along political party lines. Whitehorse
Whitehorse () is the capital of Yukon, and the largest city in Northern Canada. It was incorporated in 1950 and is located at kilometre 1426 (Historic Mile 918) on the Alaska Highway in southern Yukon. Whitehorse's downtown and Riverdale areas occupy both shores of the Yukon River, which rises in British Columbia and meets the Bering Sea in Alaska. The city was named after the White Horse Rapids for their resemblance to the mane of a white horse, near Miles Canyon, before the river was dammed. Because of the city's location in the Whitehorse valley and relative proximity to the Pacific Ocean, the climate is milder than comparable northern communities such as Yellowknife. Porter Creek Centre is an electoral district which returns a member (known as an MLA) to the Legislative Assembly of Yukon, Canada. It was created in 2002 out of the Whitehorse ridings of Porter Creek North and Porter Creek South. It encompasses the Whitehorse subdivision of Whistle Bend and part of the subdivision of Porter Creek. It is bordered by the ridings of Porter Creek South, Porter Creek North, and Riverdale North. Paolo Gallina
Paolo Gallina is a Canadian politician, who was elected to the Legislative Assembly of Yukon in the 2016 election. He represented the electoral district of Porter Creek Centre as a member of the Yukon Liberal Party until his defeat in the 2021 Yukon general election. Gallina has a background in tourism, sport management and community investment. Prior to entering territorial politics, he was the Community Investment Manager at Northwestel. He also served as Marketing Manager for the 2007 Canada Winter Games in Whitehorse and promoted Yukon culture and tourism at Canada's Northern House during the Winter Olympics in Vancouver in 2010. The Yukon Party (french: Parti du Yukon) is a conservative political party in Yukon, Canada. It is the successor to the Yukon Progressive Conservative Party. Formation With Prime Minister Brian Mulroney's Progressive Conservative federal government's decreasing popularity, the Yukon Progressive Conservatives decided to sever its relations with the federal Conservatives, and renamed itself the "Yukon Party" in 1991. 2021 Yukon General Election
The 2021 Yukon general election was held on April 12, 2021 to return members of the 35th Yukon Legislative Assembly. The election resulted in a hung parliament where the incumbent governing Yukon Liberal Party and the opposition Yukon Party won 8 seats each, while the Yukon New Democratic Party held the remaining 3. As the incumbent party given the first opportunity to form government, a Liberal minority government was sworn in on April 23, 2021. The Liberals and NDP announced the establishment of a formal confidence and supply agreement on April 28, 2021. During the 2016 election, the Liberals included a commitment in their platform to introduce fixed election dates in the territory. The ''Whitehorse Star'' is one of two newspapers in Whitehorse, Yukon, Canada. When founded in 1900 it appeared only once a week, and its progress to Monday through Friday publication occurred in fits and starts; it was issued twice a week for a time, and then three times a week in the 1960s and five times a week from around 1980 to 1982. In 1982, the paper changed to publishing three times a week. The paper returned to publishing five times a week in 1985 until 2019.
