Yuan Center
The Yuan Center of Art () is a multifunctional arts center and gallery located in the Haidian District, Beijing, China. The center houses four large exhibition halls for visual art, an experimental theatre, conference and symposia spaces, and a restaurant. The design concept of the building integrates the elements of architectural minimalism with a traditional Chinese construction pattern called "jiugongge" (九宫格). A recent show, entitled ''After Culture: An Exhibition of Contemporary Chinese Painting'', featured the work of several major Chinese artists, including Ma Kelu, Shang Yang, Ma Lu, Ding Fang, and Peng Si. Haidian District
Haidian District () is a district of the municipality of Beijing. It is mostly situated in northwestern Beijing, but also to a lesser extent in the west, where it has borders with Xicheng District and Fengtai District. It is 431 square km in area, making it the second-largest district in urban Beijing area (after Chaoyang), and is home to 2,240,124 inhabitants (2000 Census). Minimalism
In visual arts, music and other media, minimalism is an art movement that began in post–World War II in Western art, most strongly with American visual arts in the 1960s and early 1970s. Prominent artists associated with minimalism include Donald Judd, Agnes Martin, Dan Flavin, Carl Andre, Robert Morris, Anne Truitt and Frank Stella. Ma Kelu
Ma Kelu (born April 8, 1954, Shanghai) is a Chinese painter. He first rose to prominence in the late 1970s and early 1980s as a member of a circle of largely self-taught, underground artists based in Beijing, who worked in direct contravention of the Chinese government's official sponsorship of Socialist Realism. After the crackdown against Avant-garde artists during the Anti-Spiritual Pollution Campaign in 1986, he began to show his paintings in the galleries of Berlin, New York, Boston, London, and Vancouver. In 2006, Kelu's work was featured in Beijing, curated by internationally renowned Chinese art historian and critic, Gao Minglu. Shang Yang (; c. 390 – 338 BC), also known as Wei Yang () and originally surnamed Gongsun, was a Chinese jurist, philosopher, and politician.Antonio S. Ding Fang
Ding Fang (); born 1956 in Wugong County, Shaanxi) is a Chinese painter and curator. He graduated from the Nanjing Fine Arts Academy in 1986, with a Masters in oil painting, where he later taught for several years. After working both as a professional artist and on the editorial staff of Fine Arts in China Magazine, he moved in 2000 to the Institute of Fine Arts at Nanjing University, where he currently teaches. His work appeared in several prominent shows in China in the early 1980s. When political circumstances made it difficult for him to continue working as an independent artist, he began to exhibit in galleries in Sweden, Vienna, Los Angeles, London, Oxford, Sydney, and Rotterdam. Peng Si
Peng Si (born 1980 in Hengyang, Hunan Province) is a contemporary Chinese painter based in Beijing. While still a student at the prestigious Central Academy of Fine Arts, Peng exhibited his paintings alongside those of long-established artists in the ''Third National Oil Painting Exhibition''. He graduated from the Central Academy in 2004. As a member of the "post-80s" generation of artists in China, Peng has been involved in several prominent group shows in the last few years; he has also been the subject of many solo exhibitions, and his work is featured in the collections of major galleries at Beijing's 798 Art Zone. Aesthetics, or esthetics, is a branch of philosophy that deals with the nature of beauty and taste, as well as the philosophy of art (its own area of philosophy that comes out of aesthetics).
