Ysgol Gyfun Gymraeg Bro Edern is an 11–18 mixed, Welsh-medium, community secondary school and sixth form in Penylan, Cardiff, Wales. The name 'Bro Edern' (Vale of Edern) refers to Saint Edern who is commemorated in the name Llanedeyrn. Of the three Welsh-medium secondary schools serving Cardiff, it is the newest (the others being Ysgol Gyfun Gymraeg Glantaf and Ysgol Gyfun Gymraeg Plasmawr). History Ysgol Gyfun Gymraeg Bro Edern was founded in September 2012, as Cardiff's third Welsh-medium secondary school, due to increasing demand for Welsh-medium education in Cardiff. During its first academic year (2012–13) when it had 71 year 7 pupils, it was based temporarily on the site of Ysgol Gyfun Gymraeg Glantaf, before moving to its permanent buildings, the former site of St Teilo's Church in Wales High School by September 2013. Penylan
Penylan is a district and Community (Wales), community in the east of Cardiff, the capital city of Wales, known for its Edwardian era period houses and spacious tree lined roads and avenue (landscape), avenues. Situated to both the north and south of the A48 road, A48 dual carriageway, it is one of the most affluent districts of Cardiff, although subdivision of the large Victorian period properties is starting to occur in the areas at the south end of the ward, mimicking the trend in neighbouring Plasnewydd. Penylan has a number of large parks, including the southern part of Roath Park, and is one of the greenest areas in Cardiff. It is served by Penylan Library. Ysgol Gyfun Gymraeg Glantaf (''Taff Bank Welsh Language Comprehensive School'') is a Welsh-medium coeducational secondary school in Llandaff North, a district in the north of Cardiff, Wales; it is the largest of its kind in the country. Of the three Welsh-medium secondary schools serving Cardiff, it was the first to be established; the others are Ysgol Gyfun Gymraeg Plasmawr and Ysgol Gyfun Gymraeg Bro Edern. Although all students speak Welsh and normally have received Welsh-language primary education, 68% (as of 2005) come from homes where Welsh is not the first language. Estyn is the education and training inspectorate for Wales. Its name comes from the Welsh language verb ''estyn'' meaning "to reach (out), stretch or extend". Ysgol Gyfun Gymraeg Plasmawr is a Welsh-medium comprehensive secondary school in Cardiff. It opened in September 1998 as the second school of its kind in Cardiff. Its buildings had formerly belonged to Waterhall Secondary Modern School and more recently formed Ysgol Gyfun Gymraeg Glantaf's Lower School. The current headteacher is John Hayes. Llanedeyrn
Llanedeyrn ( cy, Llanedern) is a former village, now a district and community, in the east of the city of Cardiff, Wales, located around 3.5 miles from the city centre. The parish of Llanedeyrn rests on the banks of the river Rhymney and is visible nesting on a hill side above the A48(M), westbound on the approach into Cardiff. The name The name used in English "Llanedeyrn" is in fact the perpetuation of an erroneous Welsh form. Saint Edern was a monk of the end of the ninth century, feast 26 August (31 August or 1 September by the old liturgical calendar). He may have been from Ireland or Wales. Biography Legend suggests that Saint Edern left Cumbria, where he was from, to go evangelize in Brittany. Accompanied by his sister Jenovefa (who could be a figure of St. Genevieve, or St. Genevieve herself), he took a road leading to a high summit on which he built a house for his sister and a simple hut for himself.
