YouthWrite
YouthWrite is an Alberta-based writing camp for young people. It bills itself as a "camp for kids who love to write... just about anything." Founded in 1996 by Gail Sidonie Sobat, it has been held at Kamp Kiwanis near Bragg Creek, Alberta and the Bennett Centre in Edmonton, Alberta. Some notable past instructors include Todd Babiak, Ted Bishop, Anita Daher, Maria Dunn, Martyn Godfrey, Myrna Kostash, Clem MartiniAnna Marie Sewell Vern Thiessen, Thomas Trofimuk, Terry Trueman, Sheri-D Wilson Sheri-D Wilson, CM D. She is the founder and coordinator of YouthWrite, a writing camp for children, a non-profit and charitable society. Her poetry and fiction, for adults and young adults, are known for her controversial themes. For 2015, Sobat was one of two writers in residence with the Metro Edmonton Federation of Libraries. She is also the founder of the Spoken Word Youth Choir in Edmonton. Early life Sobat was born in Calgary, Alberta of first-generation Ukrainian-Canadian and Serb-Canadian parents. A striking Drumheller miner with socialist sympathies, her Ukrainian grandfather had been blacklisted by the RCMP in his youth; her Depression-era parents maintained socialist leanings throughout their lives. Anita Daher
Anita Daher is an author, screenwriter, producer, show host and actor based in Winnipeg, Manitoba. She has worked in book publishing since 1995 and has published in print, audio and e-book format in Canada, the United States, and Europe. She is also an actor on stage and screen. Maria Dunn (musician)
Maria Dunn is a Juno-winning Canadian songwriter and musician. She has been described as "an arrestingly powerful singer-songwriter who writes great historical and social commentary." A storyteller through song, her music blends Celtic folk with North American bluegrass and country influences. Early life Born in Scotland, she moved as a child with her family to Ontario. Martyn Godfrey
Martyn Godfrey (April 17, 1949 — March 10, 2000) was an English-Canadian author of children's fantasy and science fiction books. Born in Birmingham, England, he moved to Toronto, Ontario when he was eight. Godfrey graduated from University of Alberta in 1974 with a teacher education degree. Godfrey began writing children's stories in the 1980s. Vern Thiessen
Vern Thiessen (born c. 1964) is a Canadian playwright. Born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Thiessen studied at the University of Winnipeg and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts. He later attended the University of Alberta, where he obtained a Master of Fine Arts degree. Thiessen previously lived in Edmonton, Alberta and was formerly a drama instructor at the University of Alberta. Sheri-D Wilson, CM D. Litt, (aka "The Mama of Dada") is a Canadian poet, spoken word artist, educator, speaker, producer and activist. From 2018-2020, Sheri-D Wilson was Poet Laureate of Calgary.
