Young Tuxedo Brass Band
The Young Tuxedo Brass Band is a brass band from New Orleans that was active after World War II. The Young Tuxedo Brass Band was founded in 1938 by John Casimir. Its name is a nod to the Tuxedo Brass Band of Papa Celestin, an ensemble in New Orleans in the 1910s and 1920s. The ensemble generally held between nine and eleven players, with two trumpets, two trombones, two reeds, a sousaphone or tuba, a snare drum, and a bass drum. Their first record was issued in 1958 on Atlantic Records, and featured Paul Barbarin on drums; other personnel included Andy Anderson and John Brunious on trumpet, Clement Tervalon, Eddie Pierson, and Jim Robinson on trombone, reedists Herman Sherman and Andrew Morgan, Wilbert "Bird" Tillman, sousaphone, and drummer Emile Knox. Herman Sherman
Herman Edward Sherman, Sr. (June 28, 1923 – September 10, 1984), was an American jazz saxophonist and bandleader. Sherman was born in New Orleans. He played clarinet in high school and later picked up alto and tenor sax. He began working with brass bands on the New Orleans jazz scene around 1940, playing in the Eureka Brass Band, the Onward Brass Band, and the Young Tuxedo Brass Band. He took over the leadership of the Young Tuxedo Brass Band in 1971 until his death in 1984, and during his tenure the group toured the United States repeatedly and appeared in Berlin in 1980. He led the ensemble in the studio for their 1983 release ''Jazz Continues'' on 504 Records. Sherman occasionally played in dance bands, but concentrated on his work in brass bands. It catalogs more than three million album entries and 30 million tracks, as well as information on musicians and bands. Gregg Stafford
Gregory Vaughan "Gregg" Stafford (born July 6, 1953, New Orleans) is an American jazz cornetist and trumpeter. He has been a jazz music educator in New Orleans since the 1980s and has led the Young Tuxedo Brass Band for more than thirty years. Stafford was a member of an incarnation of the Fairview Baptist Church Marching Band, established by banjoist Danny Barker in 1971. He was awarded a bachelor's degree at Southern University in 1976 and played locally from the mid-1970s. Gregg teamed with Dr. Michael White playing in each other's bands to preserve the musical heritage of New Orleans. Dr. White formed his Original Liberty Jazz Band in 1981. 504 Records is a record label founded by Mike Dine in 1979 that specializes in New Orleans jazz. The name comes from an area code in New Orleans. History Mike Dine was a British draughtsman and jazz fan living in England when he met Tom Stagg, now a British expatriate, jazz fan, and founder of NOLA Records. During the 1960s, Stagg had helped bring to Europe musicians such as John Handy, Andrew Morgan, Louis Nelson, Alton Purnell, Emanuel Sayles, and Kid Thomas. When Dine started 504 Records in 1979, he hired Stagg as a producer, and Stagg shut down NOLA Records. Newport Jazz Festival
The Newport Jazz Festival is an annual American multi-day jazz music festival held every summer in Newport, Rhode Island. Elaine Lorillard established the festival in 1954, and she and husband Louis Lorillard financed it for many years. They hired George Wein to organize the first festival and bring jazz to Rhode Island. Most of the early festivals were broadcast on Voice of America radio, and many performances were recorded and released as albums. In 1972, the Newport Jazz Festival was moved to New York City. In 1981, it became a two-site festival when it was returned to Newport while continuing in New York. Andrew Morgan (musician)
Andrew Morgan (March 19, 1903 – September 19, 1972) was an American jazz clarinetist and saxophonist. Early life Morgan was born in Pensacola, Florida. He played clarinet with the Imperial Band in the mid-1920s and then joined his brother Isaiah Morgan's band in 1925. Sam Morgan led this ensemble for its recordings in 1927. Career Morgan played in the late-1920s and 1930s with Kid Howard, Kid Rena, and Kid Thomas Valentine. Jim Robinson, also known as Big Jim Robinson (December 25, 1892 – May 4, 1976) was an American jazz musician, based in New Orleans, renowned for his deep, wide-toned, robust "tailgate" style of trombone playing, using the slide to achieve a wide swoop between two notes (a technique that classical musicians call "glissando") and rhythmic effects.
