Yeovil Town House
The Town House is a municipal building in Union Street in Yeovil, Somerset, England. The building, which is the meeting place of Yeovil Town Council, is a Grade II listed building. History The first municipal building in Yeovil was the "Tolle Hall" in The Borough, which was used as a courthouse and a Village lock-up, lock up for petty criminals and dated back at least to the early 17th century. By the early 19th century, the Tolle Hall had become dilapidated, and the town commissioners decided to commission a new building to be known as the "Town Hall": the site they selected in the High Street had been occupied by local businesses including an ironmonger and a sadler. The new building was designed by Thomas Stent in the Neoclassical architecture, neoclassical style, built by John Rawlings at a cost of £4,000 and was completed in 1849. Yeovil ( ) is a town and civil parishes in England, civil parish in the district of South Somerset, England. The population of Yeovil at the last census (2011) was 45,784. More recent estimates show a population of 48,564. It is close to Somerset's southern border with Dorset, from London, south of Bristol, from Sherborne and from Taunton. The aircraft and defence industries which developed in the 20th century made it a target for bombing in the Second World War; they are still major employers.
