Yellowknife North
Yellowknife North is a territorial electoral district for the Legislative Assembly of the Northwest Territories, Canada. It is one of seven districts that represent Yellowknife, the territorial capital. It encompasses Old Town, Niven Heights, some of downtown, and a large rural hinterland centered on the Ingraham Trail. The district previously existed from 1975 to 1999, but was dissolved at the 1999 election. Rylund Johnson
Rylund Johnson is a Canadian politician, who was elected to the Legislative Assembly of the Northwest Territories in the 2019 election. He represents the electoral district of Yellowknife North. Political positions Johnson is a member of the federal Green Party, describing himself as a part of the "millenial green wave addressing political apathy." He proposed that the Northwest Territories Power Corporation bring in revenue through district heating, which would therefore reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Johnson is an advocate for drug decriminalization following similar actions in the city of Vancouver. Johnson also supports a system of guaranteed basic income and advocated for the implementation of such a system with fellow Frame Lake MLA Kevin O'Reilly. Weledeh
Weledeh (or Yellowknife - Weledeh) was a territorial electoral district for the Legislative Assembly of the Northwest Territories, Canada. It was one of seven districts that represent Yellowknife, and included the more rural communities of Detah and N'Dilo. 2019 Northwest Territories General Election
The 2019 Northwest Territories general election was held on October 1, 2019. Nineteen members were elected to the Legislative Assembly of the Northwest Territories. Election On September 6, 2019, Premier Bob McLeod announced that he would not seek re-election. Four other incumbents announced they would not seek re-election, including three of seven cabinet ministers — Health Minister Glen Abernethy, Housing Minister Alfred Moses, and Finance Minister Robert C. McLeod. Not counting the three acclaimed MLAs (RJ Simpson, Frederick Blake Jr, and Jackson Lafferty), only four incumbent members out of 11 running won reelection: Kevin O'Reilly, Julie Green, Shane Thompson, and Caroline Cochrane. Cory Vanthuyne
Cory E. Vanthuyne is a Canadian politician, who was elected to the Legislative Assembly of the Northwest Territories in the 2015 election. He represented the electoral district of Yellowknife North until the 2019 election, when he was defeated by Rylund Johnson. Prior to his election to the legislature, Vanthuyne served two terms on Yellowknife City Council. Vanthuyne is also a curler. Roy Erasmus
Roy Erasmus is a politician and lawyer from Northwest Territories, Canada. He is a former member of the Legislative Assembly of the Northwest Territories. Erasmus was elected to the Northwest Territories Legislature in the 1995 Northwest Territories general election. Erasmus' electoral district was abolished at the end of his first term and he ran for re-election in the new Weledeh electoral district. Michael Ballantyne
Michael Alan Ballantyne (February 27, 1945 – June 19, 2008) was a Canadian politician and humanitarian. He was a city councillor for Yellowknife City Council from 1978 and in 1979 became mayor until his resignation in 1983. He served as a Member and Speaker of the Legislative Assembly of the Northwest Territories from 1983 to 1995. Ballantyne was elected to the Northwest Territories Legislature in the 1983 Northwest Territories general election, winning the Yellowknife North electoral district. He was re-elected to a second term in the 1987 Northwest Territories general election. He was re-elected to his third and final term in the 1991 Northwest Territories general election. George Braden
George Braden (November 4, 1949 – May 25, 2015) was a Canadian politician from the Northwest Territories, Canada. Elected as "Government Leader", Braden would retroactively become the second premier of the Northwest Territories, after a motion was passed in 1994 to change the official title. Dave Nickerson (born April 30, 1944) is a Canadian politician from Northwest Territories, Canada. Before politics In 1965, Nickerson arrived in the Northwest Territories and worked at the Discovery and Giant Mines. He then left this position to establish his own minerals exploration business. 2015 Northwest Territories General Election
The 2015 Northwest Territories general election was held November 23, 2015. Under the territory's Fixed election dates in Canada, fixed election date legislation, the election was supposed to be held on October 5, 2015, however, since the federal election date of October 19, 2015, overlapped with that date, the N.W.T. government moved the date of the territorial election. The election selected 19 members of the Legislative Assembly of the Northwest Territories. Term extension debate In March 2014 the 17th Northwest Territories Legislative Assembly, current Legislative Assembly voted to extend its term from four years to five. The act will need to be approved by the federal government. Yellowknife
Yellowknife (; Dogrib: ) is the capital, largest community, and only city in the Northwest Territories, Canada. It is on the northern shore of Great Slave Lake, about south of the Arctic Circle, on the west side of Yellowknife Bay near the outlet of the Yellowknife River. Yellowknife and its surrounding water bodies were named after a local Dene tribe, who were known as the "Copper Indians" or "Yellowknife Indians", today incorporated as the Yellowknives Dene First Nation. They traded tools made from copper deposits near the Arctic Coast. Its population, which is ethnically mixed, was 19,569 per the 2016 Canadian Census. 1999 Northwest Territories General Election
The 1999 Northwest Territories general election was held on December 6, 1999. This was the first election under the new boundaries that were created when Nunavut was carved out of the Northwest Territories. 19 members were elected, five fewer than in the previous election. The main issues in this election were Native self-government and control over the territory's resources. On polling day, Yellowknife was caught in an extreme blizzard that cut off-road traffic and supplies. This was also the last election in Canada in the 20th century. The election was conducted under a non-partisan rules as the government operates under consensus, and Elections N.W.T. has not recognized parties since 1905. Ingraham Trail
Highway 4, known as the Ingraham Trail, extends from Yellowknife, Northwest Territories to Tibbitt Lake, approximately east of Yellowknife. It was built in the mid-1960s as the first leg of a 'road to resources' with the original intention of encircling Great Slave Lake. The highway is designated as a northern/remote route of Canada's National Highway System. The Ingraham Trail serves as both an industrial and recreational highway. In February and March each year, the trail is the initial section of the Tibbitt to Contwoyto Winter Road to three diamond mines located northeast of Yellowknife.
